It’s a Super Bowl week tradition, the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona. This used to be the rowdiest tournament in golf and although they’ve toned things down, 5000 fans will be in attendance per day.
This marks the first time a significant amount of fans will be allowed in attendance at an event since the pandemic, meaning it could be the most interesting tournament to watch in nearly a year. It usually is anyways (non Major).
2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Jon Rahm +650
Jon Rahm is heavy chalk this weekend and not just because he’s the #2 golfer in the world. Rahm played his college golf at Arizona State and currently lives in Scottsdale, so he’s very familiar with this course.
Rahm finished 9th here last year, with his poorest round being a 70 on Sunday. He averages a 68.25 on the course and has started playing in the WMPO while still in college.
Rahm has finished in 7th in his two starts during the 2021 calendar year, although shooting just par over the weekend last Saturday and Sunday at the Farmer’s Open. Still better have a ticket on him.
2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Webb Simpson +1600
Pretty good ROI for a golfer who won here last year, staving off a red hot Tony Finau in a one-hole playoff. Simpson was simply great all around, with a 71% driving accuracy and hitting 77.8% of his GIR.
Simpson is currently the #9 golfer in the world, and finished 4th in the Sony Open in Hawaii in his last start. He may be a bit rusty though after skipping the last two weeks on the West Coast.
Simpson has still posted the #2 driving accuracy on the tour so far in the 2021 campaign. You’d think bombers would get an edge at places like here and Torrey Pines, but Simpson shows accuracy is just as important.
2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open Championship Free Golf Betting Odds: Hideki Matsuyama +2500
Patrick Reed won at 25/1 last week, and there are worse options for another nice payout at those odds than Matsuyama. The +1 finish at Torrey Pines is a bit worrisome, but Matsuyama is a two time WMPO winner.
It’s been a few years since Matsuyama has seen podium here (2016, 2017) but he did finish 16th at the Phoenix Open last year at -10. If Matsuyama wins this you’d kick yourself not having at least a little scratch on the 2-time champ.
2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Gary Woodland +6000
That’s a must-buy price on another past champ as Gary Woodland won here in 2018. Woodland had a rough go of it with a 40th place finish here last year, but he bombed it with a 323.8 yard driving average.
Woodland shot an even par at Torrey Pines last week, but he had a 66 to open and a couple rough rounds on Friday and Saturday. He’s battling back from a hip ailment, but is said to be healthy.
2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open Free Golf Betting Odds: J.B. Holmes +25000
There are worse long shot plays than the guy who led last year’s WMPO in driving distance J.B. Holmes (327.8). That led to 2 Eagles en route to a 16th place finish.
Holmes had a fighting chance until a final round 75 last year. It’s a place he plays well, and he knocked out some rust playing in the Farmer’s last week for his first tournament since last October.
