This weekend is a look ahead tournament for the PGA, as all the talk at the Valero Open at TPC San Antonio will be about next weekend in Augusta. The last tune-up before the Masters is an important one for a lot of golfers.
Some key players like Billy Horschel and world #1 Dustin Johnson have taken the week off to prepare for Augusta. Others, namely Rickie Fowler and Charley Hoffman, need a win at the Valero just to qualify for the Masters. Fowler hasn’t missed a major since 2010.
Cory Conners is the defending champion here at TPC San Antonio, but that’s back in 2019 after last year’s event was cancelled. Conners is +2000 to defend, but it’s Jordan Spieth topping the field at +1000.
2021 Valero Texas Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Jordan Spieth +1000
There’s worse bets out there than Jordan Spieth at 10:1 in a diminished field. Spieth has rounded back into form with three top 5’s in his last five tournaments, and it would be a huge story if he could get a win heading into the Masters.
Spieth is also a Texas native, and played well last week in Austin making it to the Sweet 16 of Match Play before falling to eventual 3rd place finisher Matt Kuchar. Spieth has a top 5 finish in this event as well.
2021 Valero Texas Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Scottie Scheffler +1400
Scottie Scheffler is another Dallas native who had a huge crowd following last week at WGC Match Play in Austin. Scheffler used that fan momentum to pace to a runner-up finish behind Horschel.
It should be a similar atmosphere behind Scheffler this weekend in San Antonio. Scheffler has three top 20 finishes in the last four stroke tournaments he’s played (with a 5th and a 7th) and those were against tougher fields.
2021 Valero Texas Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Charley Hoffman 1st Round Top 5 +600
Charley Hoffman has made the cut in all 14 Valero Texas Open tournaments he’s played, logging six top 10 finishes. Hoffman won this event in 2016 as well. Hoffman also finished 2nd here in 2019, shooting 68, 64, and 67 over the last three rounds.
Hoffman also needs a win to qualify for the Masters Tournament, adding some extra incentive for the 44-year-old. Hoffman’s 34th place finish at Punta Cana last weekend is disappointing considering most of the big names were participating in Match Play in Austin.
Hoffman is familiar here, but also no Spring chicken. He may play well here early before fading over the weekend especially after returning from the Dominican Republic.
2021 Valero Texas Open Free Golf Betting Odds: Cameron Tringale Top 5 +600
Cameron Tringale finished -10 at this event in 2019, doomed in by his 74 on Friday. He shot a 69, 68, and 67 the other three days though, and could have been vying for a top 5 if not for a poor 2nd round.
Tringale also needs the win here to get to Augusta, and he’s posted four top 20’s in his last seven tournaments since the Farmer’s Open. With a lesser field, Tringale should be in the hunt all weekend.
2021 Valero Texas Open Championship Free Golf Betting Odds: Aaron Wise Miss Cut +130
Aaron Wise is very hit or miss, with a 65th or worse in 5 of his last 7 tournaments. He also has a 2nd place at the Mayakoba Classic (way back in December) and 13th at the Honda Classic.
Wise missed the cut in his only other appearance at the Valero Texas Open, but is also averaging 1.67 putts over the last month which is 108th in this field.
