Accuracy will trump length off the tee in this one – bombers will have less of an advantage for the third week in a row on TOUR, although a long drive of two or three certainly won’t hurt.
Water, deep rough and deep bunkers will greet the PGA pros as will some possible inclement weather which always makes things interesting. It will be the player with the best all-around game that will likely prevail this week.
So, who should we keep an extra eye on his week? Let’s take a look.
2017 Memorial Golf Tournament Favorites:
Dustin Johnson +550
DJ is officially in a slump! It’s amazing that we can call finishing T12 at the PLAYERS and T13 at the Byron Nelson in his last two starts a slump – he has finished inside the top 15 in seven straight starts to boot!
He currently leads the TOUR in driving distance, greens in regulation and total strokes gained and he finished solo third in this tournament last year.

Johnson is the obvious favorite every time he tees it up right now – his track history here only enhances that fact!
Jordan Spieth +1100
Hasn’t been his dominant self lately but a final-round 65 last week propelled him to a T2 at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational – this after consecutive missed cuts! He has made the cut here all four times he’s played including a T3 in 2015 and a T19 in 2014.
The good news is that Spieth should have his confidence back and that his putter has re-awoken. While I don’t love Spieth this week, it would be a huge mistake to dismiss him altogether.
Jon Rahm +1200
Impressive rookie plays this course for the first time – that is certainly nothing new to him! Despite, he has finished inside the top 5 six straight times on TOUR including a T2 last week at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational.
He ranks fifth on the PGA TOUR in birdie average, as well as 10th in scoring average and has the perfect game to contend again this week. Get used to seeing this name folks – he’s here to stay!
2017 Memorial Golf Tournament Contenders:
Hideki Matsuyama +1800
2014 champ finished T5 here as well in 2015 before somehow missing the cut in this event last year. Matsuyama was on an absolute tear during the winter but has slowed as of late.
There is no denying his tremendous all-around skillset however and he did finish T11 at the Maters and T22 at the PLAYERS in his last two starts.
His strength is tee-to-green which suits this track perfectly – length combined with accuracy is what it takes here. Matsuyama hasn’t been inside the top 10 since February but this is a chance to break that skid.
Adam Scott +2200
Tees it up for the first time since a T6 at the PLAYERS – he also finished T9 at the Masters. His track record here is certainly impressive – a T13 in 2013 and a T4 in 2014 are thanks to a superb all-around game.
He sits 15th on the PGA TOUR in total strokes gained, 13th in scoring average, 33rd in GIR, 18th in birdies-or-better and his typical putting woes have all-but-been alleviated. Scott is a threat every time he tees it up right now – expect him to be in the hunt.
Matt Kuchar +3300
Can you believe its been over three years since Kuch tasted victory on the PGA TOUR? Muirfield Village may be his best chance to snap that skid. 2013 winner of the Memorial has eight top 15 finishes here – that win, a T2 in 2011 and another six top 15s included.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He finished T4 here last year and enters in decent form – a T9 at the AT&T Byron Nelson was followed by a T12 at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational last week – his last eight rounds have been under par. Scott is as good as there is tee-to-green and is a decent bet to make some noise in arguably his favorite event on TOUR.
Kevin Kisner +4000
Last week’s winner at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational stays on my radar this week. He was money with the irons last week – he ranked second in the field in strokes gained: around-the-green and third in strokes gained: putting which should come in very handy this week.
His best result here came in 2015 when he finished a T8 – with his short game spot on, I expect the momentum from last week to carry forth in this event.
2017 Memorial Golf Tournament Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Tony Finau +5500
Lovin me some Finau this week! His track history here has been good – a T8 in 2016 and a T11 last year have me taking a long look at him this week. Currently he is fifth on TOUR in GIR, 23rd in adjusted scoring, fourth in strokes gained: off-the-tee and seventh in driving distance – perfect for this track.
He has finished inside the top 35 in his last seven starts overall and enters off a T29 at Colonial. Translation – current form, current statistics and track history are all on his side.
Bill Haas +8000
Haas hasn’t been all that great most recently but his track history makes him worthy of mention. It’s true that he missed the cut here last year but he did have top 10 finished here in 2013 and 2014 before that. He enters off a T12 at Colonial last week and could be a factor this week on a track that obviously fits his eye.
2017 Memorial Golf Tournament Picks:
I just can’t look past John Rahm at +1200 this week. His all-around game is arguably the best on TOUR at this time. He has been a fixture on leaderboards all year long and is most deserving of his second win on TOUR.
My sleeper is Tony Finau who looks like a steal at +5500. His track history here is good and his emerging all-around game fits Muirfield like a glove.
