Alex the Great is at it yet again this season, netting nine goals in his 18 games and helping lead his Capitals team to a 11-5-2 record.
Center Nicklas Backstrom leads the team in points with nearly a point per game, and the depth has produced for Washington throughout the lineup to help offset Evgeni Kuznetsov’s slow start.
The first overall pick from this past summer’s draft, Auston Matthews, shares a lot of similar attributes to fellow former top-pick, counterpart Alex Ovechkin.
While the two are different players, to be sure, both have a knack for scoring goals and have large frames with soft hands.
Washington Capitals
Alex Ovechkin has won the Rocket Richard trophy for the league’s leading goalscorer for four consecutives years entering the 2016-17 season.
I’m just going to let that sink in for a minute… four straight years and Ovy’s earned the award six times and is just 30 years old.
Evgeni Kuznetsov actually led the Caps in scoring last year with 77 points, but has struggled out of the gates to the rune of just seven so far this year.

It’s fellow pivot, Nicklas Backstrom, who has picked up the lead role with his 17 in 18 games so far, though yet to receive his spot back on Overchkin’s line as of yet.
The depth of the Capitals is evident, as Marcus Johansson, TJ Oshie, Kuznetsov, Andre Burakovsky, and even Jay Beagle have all chipped in significant contributions.
The back-end has the likes of John Carlson, Matt Niskanen, Karl Alzner and Brooks Orpik, who have helped lead the unit to a 2nd best rating in goals against at a 2.2 clip.
Braden Holtby has quickly ascended to be in the consideration of a top netminder in the league. Holtby, who is still just 27-years old, owns a 9-4-1 record on the year with a 1.99 GAA and a .927 SV%.
The former 4th rounder has developed into an Olympic consideration and was included on Canada’s World Cup team this past summer.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto is on the right path in their rebuild, which was expedited by winning the draft lottery this past summer, and with that the ability to select stud center, Auston Matthews.
Matthews has been terrific as a rookie so far, with 13 points and 19 games despite a recent slump.
Joining Matthews are fellow draftees William Nylander, Morgan Reilly, Mitch Marner. Marrner is one point off of the team lead in points with 16 in 19 games, sitting just behind winger James van Riemsdyk.
Nylander has 14 of his own and Reilly leading the backend with 11.
The veterans are not to be forgotten however, as van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri have all registered double digit points in each of their 19 games played.
Kadri has developed into a solid two-way player, while often playing against opponents’ top-line and shutting them down.

After a tough start to his leafs’ career, goaltender Frederik Andersen has performed better as of late.
The Leafs dealt a first round pick and Jonathan Bernier for the goaltender in the off-season and subsequently signed him to a five-year pact to be the goaltender of the future behind their young core.
On the year, Andersen has a .09 SV% and 3.03 GAA with a 8-6-3 record.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- The Maple Leafs are 7-3-0 at home this season.
- Washington has the 2nd best goals against in the league, but just the 15th ranked PK.
- The Capitals are 5-2-2 on the road.

The Leafs have actually turned into a team who can score, with six of their forwards tallying double-digit point totals already.
In their past four home games, Toronto has scored 20 goals, and has averaged 3.9 goals per game while playing at the ACC across the duration of this season.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
I think the Caps should be able to score on the road in Toronto, as the Leafs’ currently sit in 26th overall in goals against, allowing an average of 3.2 per game.
At the same time, the Leafs have produced in volume on home ice and although they favce a tough netminder in Holtby, they should be able to chip in a couple to help reach the over.
