The bottom two teams in the Pacific Division will do battle in the desert, though the Vancouver Canucks sit 14 points ahead of the NHL’s worst Arizona team.
Arizona, in the midst of a rebuild, is out of the playoff hunt already at the midway point and will be selling off aging or expiring assets come trade deadline, to help re-stock the cupboard and in effort to obtain the #1 pick in the draft.
Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver had a six-game win streak at the end of December and into early January, but have since come back down to earth.
Since the end of the win-streak, the Canucks have gone 2-2-3 yet are still somehow just one point out of the final wild card spot.
Being in contention for a final playoff spot might be the worst thing for the organization, considering the aging core with heavy contracts and decline in production since their Stanley Cup final appearance in 2011.

It will be interesting to see if ownership allows rebuilding trades come trade deadline if they remain in the hunt.
Henrik Sedin recently registered his 1,000th career point, which put has put him into a tie for the team lead on the year with 31 points.
He is tied with Bo Horvat, the young center who will likely usurp Henrik at the main pivot in Vancouver unless the Canucks are able to find a new #1 centerman.
A move the Canucks may need to consider is moving the likes of Chris Tanev along with another piece in effort to net a top young forward such as Matt Duchene, who is available for the right price.
Tanev has been a solid young defenseman since entering the league and Colorado certainly has a need on their back-end, so the deal would seem to make sense for both teams to address their issues.
The Canucks have Olli Juolevi waiting in the wings, the former 5th overall selection who is currently with the London Knights, as well as the likes of Troy Stecher.
The goaltending play of Ryan Miller has been solid this season, and now in the final year of his current deal, may be a piece that can be moved to a goalie-needy team.
On the season, Miller owns a 14-11-3 record with a .919 SV5% and a 2.50 GAA. He may relinquish this start to Jacob Markstrom, who has a similar 2.59 GAA and a .912 SV%.
Arizona Coyotes
The Coyotes are in dead last in the NHL this season with just 36 points, and have a solid shot at the #1 overall pick in the upcoming draft should this trend continue.
The Coyotes are out of the hunt this year and realize they’re building towards the future, so tanking and selling off what assets they can is the right move by new GM, John Chayka.
Players likely to be on the way out include the veteran captain, Shane Doan, who has went on the record to say that he would accept a trade away from the only franchise he’s known.
Martin Hanzal could play a nice third-line center role for a contending team, and I wouldn’t be overly surprised to see him return to the Chicago Blackhawks for another Cup run.
The next Coyotes captain in waiting is likely Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who is an established star defenseman at 25 years old and entering his prime years.

He solidifies a blueline with veteran Alex Goligoski, Luke Schenn, rookie Jakob Chychrun and fellow youngster, Anthony DeAngelo. Michael Stone is likely to be dealt and return some future considerations.
Mike Smith is a veteran who will likely stay put come the deadline, with a $5.667mm cap hit that doesn’t expire until 2019-20.
The netminder owns a 10-13-5 record on the year with a .915 SV% and a 2.95 GAA, while playing behind the league’s worst team.

Free Vancouver Canucks vs. Arizona Coyotes NHL Hockey Prediction:
Between the steady goaltending play for each time, and their respective rankings of just 26th and 29th overall in goals per game, this should be a low scoring affair.
Vancouver has been awful on the road this season, as evidenced by their five total wins in 22 tries, scoring an average of just 2.23 goals per game on the road.
On that note, Arizona hasn’t fared much better while at home, scoring just 2.30 goals on average.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Under 5.5
All signs points towards the under coming through, with each team possessing a futile offense and no real scoring stars.
