These two squads have split their first two games this season with the Leafs taking the most recent game 5-2.
Toronto is three spots up on Tampa Bay for second in the Atlantic Division while the Islanders are fighting to stay in on of the two Wild Card slots.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a solid 42-18-9 record on the season with a 17-11-4 tally away from Scotiabank Arena. This is the second contest of a five-game road trip and are coming off a 5-4 shootout victory in Ottawa this past Saturday.
A more recent reflection of their record shows that they’ve won four of their past six on the road and four of their past six overall.
Offense
The offensive depth of Toronto’s front twelve has carried them through much of this season. Whether it be in the opposition’s end or backchecking in their own, their forwards are the most counted on.
They have a 9th ranked offense which is averaging 3.42 goals scored per game this season and the Leafs have the second best power play in the NHL, operating at 25.9% this year.
Three players have hit the 30-goal plateau for the Buds with William Nylander leading the charge after potting home 35 through 69 contests.
In terms of overall points, Mitch Marner leads all Maple Leafs in scoring with 89 in 69 games.
Defense
When you look at their defense on paper, it doesn’t scream confidence or stability. Yes they tried to shore things up on the back end prior to the trade deadline but it still doesn’t seem like a blue line that can go the distance. That is, until you look at the numbers.
Toronto is averaging 2.68 goals against per game which has them as the 5th best defense in the league. Their penalty kill sits at 12th with an 80.8% success rate on the year.
Not bad for a patched up defense on a team that has most of it’s dollars committed up front.
Goaltending
It was reported that Ilya Samsonov is slated to get the start in this one. That could change prior to game-time depending on the potential arrival of the birth of his child, who is due any day now.
In any case, Samsonov has 24-8-3 record on the season with a top five goals against average of 2.35 and a save percentage of .917 on the year.
New York Islanders
The Islanders have a 36-27-8 record overall and a 20-12-3 tally at home this season. They’re coming off of a California road trip that saw them finish with consecutive wins before returning home for this game. New York is 5-2 through their most recent 7 games and are 4-2 through their last 6 home contests.
They’re kind of the opposite of Toronto as they aren’t as fun to watch and they rely heavily on their defensive game and goaltending to get them through the day.
Offense
Even with the addition of 30-goal scorer Bo Horvat, the Islanders continue to struggle to put pucks in the net.
They’re averaging a 22nd ranked 2.93 goals scored per game and are sporting the third-worst power play in the league at 16.5%.
While Bo Horvat has 36 goals overall on the season, 31 of those came with Vancouver. Brock Nelson is the lone Islander who has scored all 30 of his goals with New York and he also leads the team with 65 points in 71 games played.
Defense
On the blue line, they’re right behind Toronto with a 6th best defense that is averaging 2.69 goals against per game. Their penalty kill ranks 10th with an 82.1% kill rate on the year.
Goaltending
The Islanders have the second-best save percentage in the league at .914 this season.
That’s in large part due to the play of goaltender Ilya Sorokin who has a 25-19-6 record, a 6th best goals against average at 2.37 and a 3rd best .925 save percentage. He’s also tied for the league lead with 5 shutouts this year and has won five of his last six games.
He’s gotten the nod each of the Islanders’ last three games and while is not confirmed he’ll get the start, he is the superior netminder on the team.

Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Islanders NHL Prediction
The one advantage that New York has on the Leafs is the play of Ilya Sorokin.
Could you imagine how many wins he’d have if the Islanders could put the puck in the net?
That being said, I’m taking Toronto on the money line because they’ve been getting solid goaltending from Samsonov and Matt Murray as of late. Add to that, their penchant for scoring and they should have a problem making it two in a row on the road.
