Tampa is absolutely struggling right now and it’s bizarre to watch but at the same time it was probably predictable. This squad has played so much hockey in the last 8 seasons 3 of which ended in the finals and it appears to have finally caught up with them.
They’re still a great team no doubt, and we’ve seen them struggle this time of year before too only to see them go on a run when it matters so we cannot count them out. But this does feel a lot different this time, which if you’re a Leafs fan must be music to your ears.
The Lightning have lost 11 of their last 16 games, not good.
The Hurricanes on the other hand are in a different situation where they have remained so consistent throughout the season and are still banging out wins without their top scorers.
They are coming off a loss however and are a meager 5-4-1 in their last 10 games so not perfect.
At any rate, we do battle between these two juggernauts in the East so let’s get into it.
Carolina Hurricanes
This team is unbelievable there’s no denying it and I want to switch gears a little bit and discuss their playoff picture given that I have hyped their strengths all year.
My issue with the Canes is their unwillingness to make adjustments in the playoffs. And I understand that contradicts what I said yesterday about the Devils and Islanders, but I do truly believe that with the Hurricanes it’s a different set of circumstances and I will explain why.
Offense
The difference is that the Islanders have proven their method works and can actually propel them to playoff series wins and if we’re being honest, probably over-achieve.

The Hurricanes are serial under-achievers since their window has opened which is part on the media and analyst community who consistently power rank them #1 heading into the season which is no different this year. But in my view the biggest reason why they don’t get it done is their inability to simplify their offensive attack and out work teams for wins.
Defense
Defensively this team does not have a weakness and it’s frightening for opponents because they force you to create really elite plays to generate scoring chances which is obviously very difficult and not something you can rely on for 60 minutes.
Goaltending
Andersen in the cage for this one who has been decent since returning from the IR.
Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning just do not look like the team we know and love to watch right now there’s no two ways about it. The depth isn’t there and one massive issue is the decline of Hedman this season.
He’s likely playing hurt and has been out at times, I also don’t think this is a sign of perpetual decline and is likely just a rough patch but there’s no denying he isn’t playing to his standards which is a concern.
Offense
Offensively this team is still top ten in the major metrics. They still have Stamkos who can score at an elite level, they still have Point who is an elite play maker and centermen and Kucherov is still a legit superstar.
Defense
Defensively is where you scratch your head when evaluating this team as their numbers have really dipped. To be 16th in the NHL in goals allowed per game with Vasilevskiy in net is just unacceptable.
I don’t like betting on this team right now for obvious reasons and I think we can chalk up their losses to their blue line.
Goaltending
Vasy is expected to go for this one and he’s posting a .914 sv% despite the defensive struggles so he’s still the best goalie in the world in most peoples eyes.

I will be on the Canes here ML -135, I think that’s great value for them on home ice against a reeling team that is considerably more shallow.
Hammer Carolina.
