2026 NHL Handicapping – Ottawa Senators vs Buffalo Sabres
Here’s why I’m backing a Buffalo ML bet below in my Senators Sabres free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Senators vs. Sabres Gameday
The Ottawa Senators visit the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday, November 4, at KeyBank Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET, with ESPN+ carrying the game in the United States.
Ottawa enters at 9-6-1 under Travis Green, sitting ahead of Buffalo in the Atlantic Division. The Senators have gone 4-5-1 in their last ten games and return east after a difficult California trip.
Ottawa has the better record, but Buffalo has been doing a better job collecting wins lately.
The Senators are coming off a loss to Anaheim. Their offensive talent hasn’t disappeared, but recent defensive performances have made life unnecessarily complicated.
Buffalo stands at 7-4-3 under Lindy Ruff.
The Sabres have won three straight, sweeping San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles on the road. It’s their most encouraging stretch of the young season, and now they have an opportunity to build on it at home.
This is the first meeting between these Atlantic Division rivals in 2026-27. Buffalo controlled much of their recent series history, although Ottawa won the last encounter.
Both clubs have something to prove. The Sabres want to establish consistency, while the Senators need to show they can recover from a rough road trip without letting another division opponent gain ground.

Ottawa Senators vs. Buffalo Sabres Odds & Previous Games
Buffalo opens as the -128 moneyline favorite, with Ottawa listed at +109. The Sabres are also priced at +187 to cover the -1.5 puck line, making the straight-up price the less demanding option.
Ottawa lost 6-3 to Anaheim after beating San Jose 5-1. Before that, the Senators fell 6-5 in overtime against Los Angeles and 4-1 against Vegas, following a 7-4 win over the Rangers.
Buffalo defeated Los Angeles 3-2, Anaheim 7-6 and San Jose 2-0. The Sabres previously lost 4-3 in overtime to Washington, giving them a 3-0-1 record over their last four outings.
Buffalo won two of three meetings with Ottawa last season. The Sabres took an 8-4 victory in October and a 3-2 overtime decision in December before the Senators answered 4-1 in April.
The Sabres also swept all four games during the 2024-25 season. That’s six Buffalo victories in the last seven meetings, although divisional history only gets you so far when the puck drops.
Ottawa owns the better overall record, but Buffalo has been more productive recently. The Sabres have also been difficult to put away in close games, going 5-0-2 in one-goal decisions.

Sabres Stats
Buffalo has scored 43 goals through 14 games, averaging just over three per contest. The Sabres have recorded 77 assists and 393 shots on goal, showing an offense capable of generating opportunities even when the finishing hasn’t always been there.
Tage Thompson leads the club with ten goals and 17 points. His ability to finish scoring chances remains Buffalo’s biggest offensive weapon.
Zach Benson has added two goals and 11 assists, giving the Sabres another creative presence up front. He returned to practice Tuesday and is available for Wednesday’s matchup.
Owen Power has contributed from the blue line, while the defense continues to search for consistency. Buffalo has allowed 47 goals, leaving plenty of room for improvement in its own zone.
The Sabres’ power play is converting 17% of its opportunities. Their penalty kill has been less dependable, an issue that could become expensive against a team with Ottawa’s offensive talent.
Buffalo can create chances, but its penalty kill still has a habit of making opponents look comfortable.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has four wins in ten appearances, while Colten Ellis has three victories and a shutout in five games. Alex Lyon remains unavailable with an upper-body injury.
Neither Luukkonen nor Ellis should be considered the confirmed starter until Buffalo announces its lineup. The Sabres will need responsible defensive coverage regardless of who gets the assignment.
Senators Stats
Ottawa averages 3.08 goals per game, keeping its offense competitive despite inconsistent results. The Senators have been effective in the faceoff circle, but possession hasn’t always translated into enough sustained pressure.
Tim Stützle leads the team with nine goals and 21 points. His speed and playmaking ability make him dangerous whenever Ottawa establishes control through the neutral zone.
Drake Batherson has also scored nine goals and contributed 18 points. Shane Pinto and Dylan Cozens provide additional scoring options, giving Travis Green some useful offensive depth.
The power play has been a major disappointment, converting only about 12% of its chances. Ottawa needs better puck movement and cleaner entries rather than another evening of wasted opportunities.
Defensively, the Senators have allowed more than three goals per game. Their recent problems have included poor coverage around the crease and difficulty clearing rebounds.
Linus Ullmark has seven wins in eight appearances, along with a 1.33 goals-against average and .945 save percentage. He remains unavailable with a lower-body injury despite returning to the ice at Tuesday’s practice.
Samuel Ersson and Jonas Johansson have handled the additional goaltending work. Ottawa has struggled to produce the same results without Ullmark, although Wednesday’s starter has not been officially established.
Warren Foegele, Andre Burakovsky and William Eklund remain sidelined, reducing Ottawa’s available forward depth. The Senators will need more from their healthy regulars to compensate.
Ottawa Senators vs. Buffalo Sabres bottom line: Buffalo enters with stronger momentum, while Ottawa needs sharper defensive execution and dependable goaltending to turn its road form around.
Ottawa Senators vs. Buffalo Sabres Hockey Betting Trends
- The Sabres have gone 3-2 straight up in their last five games.

- The Senators are 2-3 straight up in their last five games.
- Also, Ottawa has seen the total go over in 4 of their last 5 games.
- Last season, the Sabres were 5-5 straight up in their last 10 games against the Senators.
- Additionally, the total went over in 6 of the last 10 games between Ottawa and Buffalo last season.
Senators Sabres Free Pick: Sabres ML -128
Here is my Senators Sabres free pick: I’m taking Buffalo Sabres ML -128. Ottawa is 7-1 when Linus Ullmark starts and 2-5-1 without him. That’s a substantial difference, and I’m not ignoring it at this price.
Buffalo also has an extra day of rest after sweeping its California trip. Ottawa went 1-2-1 out west and now faces another difficult assignment without its top goaltender. That’s a poor combination for a road underdog.
I’m not asking Buffalo to become a powerhouse overnight; I’m asking the Sabres to beat a vulnerable opponent.
The Senators can score, so this isn’t a free pass for Buffalo. But the Sabres have the opportunity to force Ottawa into another game where its replacement goaltending must make the difference.
I don’t need the puck line or a two-goal victory.
Give me the home team, the rest advantage and the better situation between the pipes.
I’m laying -128 with the Sabres ML.
