The St. Louis Blues are a tough evaluation right now. 6-4 over their last 10, 3-2 on the road, 3-2 at home.
They’re so mid it hurts. They caught some serious fire after a tough start to the year and Binnington stopped something crazy like 114 of 119 straight shots.
But now they can’t string together any wins and are looking pretty mediocre in a division that is going to be a dog fight with Nashville showing signs of life as of late.
The Penguins on the other hand look determined led by their fearless captain Sidney Crosby. He still puts up 4 points on the scoresheet like clockwork and they are getting quality wins over quality teams right now.
They did drop one to Carolina and another too Toronto recently, but followed it up with a win over the Golden Knights. And after spending quite a bit of time on the road in the first quarter of the season they get a nice little homestand here.
Let’s take a closer look at the tale of the tape.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues are not taking a ton of shots on goal right now but what’s more is that they do not have a good shooting percentage either. Resulting in a terrible offensive output good for 24th in the league.
Binnington has caught lightning in a bottle a few times this year but he’s Jekyll and Hyde, quite literally. He’s expected to go in this one and heading in he’s posting a 3.05 GAA along with a .900 save %.
Very good for a team whose defenceman are playing very poorly. Parayko has lost a step and as much as I love Leddy, he should not be playing top 4 minutes right now.
A huge positive for the Blues is that Ryan O’Reilly has found his game and has gotten back to being the centerman we know him as. But until this squad can really figure it out defensively, figure out how to get clutch scoring without Perron, and get healthy they remain a mediocre at best team and I hate to see it.
Pittsburgh Penguins
I’ve watched the Penguins a lot this season and they are certainly not the wagon they once were, but I do think many are sleeping on this teams ability to go on a run by taking the easy way out saying things like “they’re old” and “can’t stay healthy”, “Crosby isn’t what he once was” etc.
On the first two points, one of their ageing core pieces just had a second stroke so there’s some legitimacy to that claim. But to those online saying Crosby isn’t up to snuff anymore are dead wrong.
He sits 9th among points leaders right in the thick of the race with the brightest young stars of the league.
This dude is playing as good as he ever has and he continues to bring his mates into the fight and bring the best out of those around him. Rakell looks great, Guentzel and Rust still bring the fastball and they look like a determined bunch.
I love this squad this year as long as they can get healthy at the right time and stay that way during the playoffs they’ll be fine. And I dearly hope Kris Letang is doing well and gets better soon for his sake most importantly but selfishly I want to see this core of the Penguins go on at least one more meaningful run.
