What is up hockey fans, it’s your boy Lavoie here with another pick on the ice. This is an awesome matchup I cannot wait to watch between two squads that are absolutely on fire.
The Penguins started the season without their big studs but have since gotten Crosby and Letang back and now Malkin is skating. They are rising through the ranks each week and are all of a sudden looking like a contender.
The Blues have been mostly healthy all season and have been rolling. One of the truly great teams in the league. Just came off an awesome Winter Classic showing against Minnesota at Target Field.
So with all of that in mind, let’s check out why these teams have been so great.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues are 5th in the league in goals per game average with 3.45. This team is really looking like the way they did when they won the cup 3 seasons ago.
One of the most balanced offensive attacks in the league. They are also getting great play on the back end with their veteran group.
They also employ the 3rd best powerplay in the league at a 29.5% success rate so this is not a unit you want to get shorthanded against.
The Penguins on the other hand have one of the worst powerplay units in the league, largely due to missing Crosby for the first stretch of the season but they have not been able to convert on their opportunities for the most part.
They do however take an absurd amount of shots on average at just over 35 per game. Although their shooting percentage is not great the volume is always something to watch out for because it’s only a matter of time before teams like that start scoring at a high rate.
See the Toronto Maple Leafs for the best example of that this season.

I do think this is where the Penguins very impressive 8 game win streak ends. I love the Blues getting the juice as such a good team with their regular starter coming in and DeSmith playing for the Penguins.
The Blues are a really stingy defensive team also, sporting one of the best penalty kills in the game as well.
Hammer the Blues tomorrow night on the road.
