Welcome to my first installment of the Oilers campaign, a team I will be covering closely all year long and to kick things off we have a matinee matchup with the Blues coming to town.

I was at the Oilers Flames game last Saturday where I saw their defensive weakness exploited by a Flames team who might actually be better than last years.
And their goaltending woes we thought may be long gone after moving on from the Smith and Koskinen era rear their ugly head once again. Campbell let in 2 soft ones early in the first period.
Having said that, he looked great against the Hurricanes last night and young backup Stuart Skinner has looked great in his time in between the pipes.
Their opponent is the incredibly formidable St. Louis Blues who have started the year 2-0 and are looking to go on another deep playoff run. And good news for them netminder Jordan Binnington has looked sharp to start the year which is much needed after Ville Husso departed for Detroit in the offseason.
So, without further ado let’s look a little deeper into these two.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues ran into a buzzsaw last year during the playoffs but were the only team in the west to take a game off of them and played well even in their losses.

The Blues have something the Oilers don’t and that is incredibly potent young offensive depth, as well as solid shut down defence. The Oilers are deeper than people give them credit for but the Oilers do not have a guy like Kyrou or Buchnevich etc.
This team is one of those squads which I wrote about last year who can beat you any number of ways. If you want to play high octane quick transition hockey they will match your pace, they will grind it out in a physical battle, or they will sit back and pounce on opportunities.
The loss of Perron is huge he came up with big goals for them so often he will be nearly impossible to replace, but look for this team to win a ton of games this year and make another deep run without a doubt.
Edmonton Oilers
This is a massive year for my Oilers, a ton of pressure on what is a mismanaged roster. With their cap constraints they are icing a 21 player roster and with the recent injury to Holloway they cannot even replace him in the lineup.
I am not one of those bad fans who piles on top of Holland for every misstep, he’s done a good job since arriving by making lemonade with what was handed to him from Chiarelli.
But there is no denying that due to those restraints the players on this roster shoulder all of the load and are expected to shine this year by most of the public. As I said earlier as well they have already struggled out of the gate with their defensive zone structure.
Philip Broberg who won an opening night roster slot has since been demoted to the minors but is expected to return soon after battling a minor ailment. But as reported in the Athletic today by Lowetide, the Oilers desperately need him to step into the top 4 role he is expected to fill.
Kulak and Nurse are nothing to shake a stick at but this blueline is in need of a difference maker right quick, and not to be a dead dog but due to the aforementioned cap constraints it is unlikely that help will come via trade.

Call me a homer for this pick but at the end of the day this team has McDavid and Draisaitl who are both scoring at unprecedented rates once again. I think it will be too much for Binnington to handle on the road and the Blues suffer their first regulation loss of the season.
