The Penguins are coming off a much needed victory over the Capitals to end a 7 game schnide. Sidney Crosby did a post game interview on TNT with Paul Bissonnette where he appeared to be in far better spirits than most other recent interviews.
The Pens are having a lot of struggles defensively and in net right now. Can they turn it around long term remains to be seen, I have seen a lot of talk lately about whether or not Jarry is a competent starting goalie and how Dumoulin and Letang lost their fastball.
The Leafs heading into this one are having a very similar trajectory. They lost a close one to Vegas by a one goal margin and won three straight games prior to that contest.
But they also have a ton of struggles defensively right now (mostly attributed to injury) and in net (also due to injury). They are missing newly acquired Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov.
So this is a tough one to handicap right now with the way things are and particularly for a handicapper like me who has had back to back losing days.
But, let’s take a crack at it anyway.
Pittsburgh Penguins
So as said before the Penguins came away with 2 points against their longtime rivals the Washington Capitals two nights ago in a game where they looked much better after the first 10 minutes of the game, and they also got some puck luck which you absolutely need to get out of a cold streak.
One thing about this Penguins team and the, granted ageing core is that they still play feisty and with an edge. They hate losing and you can see it in their game every night which you can’t say about their opponent in this matchup.
The Penguins have built themselves on having this kind of identity and they suffocate teams with their hard work and determination. It sounds corny as hell I know but it’s why I like betting on teams like them in games like this.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The biggest surprise for most of us with this team is where they rank in goals per game to start the year. They sit 23rd in the league with a shade under 3 per contest which is simply not good enough of course.
This team is obviously far too talented to stay at the margin and this coming from a guy who hates this team and doesn’t believe in them, but Matthews is cold to start the year and we all know he’ll eventually heat up.
Tavares has gotten off to a hot start and because of his leadership and production this Leafs squad is getting wins to stay in the hunt but they are well below the playoff line right now and need to make up some ground.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Penguins ML
I’m going with Sid the Kid and the Flightless Birds in this one. I think what they needed was to get on the road and have a little time with the boys away from their home lives to get right.
Another thing that I don’t like is Toronto’s third stringer being in but them being juiced to -150 or more on the vig. Seems like a sucker bet to me.
I’ll be watching this one closely. Maybe the Penguins start to make the ground they also need to cover.
