At first glance, Saturday’s game between the Penguins and Wild would seem to be a trap at least as far as betting is concerned. Despite being 0-3 so far on the season, Minnesota is a slight favorite in this one over Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh Penguins
There are reasons to like – and also not like – Pittsburgh on Saturday night in St. Paul. One of the major reasons for a possible Penguins +100 wager in this one is for the simple reason that Minnesota is slow out of the gates at 0-3.
The factors for not betting on Mike Sullivan’s team might actually outweigh the reasons for liking Pittsburgh on Saturday. For one, this is the first time in the first 4 games of the year that the Penguins have gone on the road.
Another reason to sway towards Minnesota here is because the Penguins have been at home all season but have still struggled. Pittsburgh is 2-2 to start the year, but have been held to 2 goals or less in 3 of 4 in 2019.

The Penguins have really only had one good offensive game this year, a 7-2 win over Columbus a week ago but with Pitt as -192 favorites. Sidney Crosby does have 2 goals and 4 assists thus far but once again, all in home games.
Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota home ice advantage just isn’t what it used to be. The Wild were just 16-18-7 at XCel Energy last season, two years after going 27-12-2 in St. Paul.
The Wild will be playing their home opener on Saturday however against a Pittsburgh team that has yet to travel in 2019. Minnesota has started off 0-3 in three road contests – at Nashville, Colorado, and Winnipeg.
The Wild at the very least have been consistent so far this year, scoring 2 goals in each of their first three games. Nobody on the Wild roster has netted more than one goal so far although Ryan Suter and Marcus Foligno both have 2 helpers.

The big pressure for Saturday night’s game falls on the Minnesota defense. The Wild have dropped games 2-4, 2-5, and 2-5 to start the young campaign. Minnesota’s GAA average is 27th in the league so far.
Devan Dubnyk has been the culprit in net for all three Minnesota losses thus far. He will get another start on Saturday trying to improve on his .882 save percentage.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Penguins are 6-18 last 24 Saturday games
- Penguins are 4-14 last 18 overall
- Wild are 7-19 last 26 home games
- Wild are 3-10 last 13 as home favorite
Free Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Minnesota Wild NHL Prediction:
This is a tough one to call mostly because both of these offenses are struggling. Pittsburgh hasn’t gone on the road yet this year, but that isn’t necessarily a downfall. Dubnyk hasn’t stopped anything in goal yet this season.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Penguins +100
That’s great value vs. an 0-3 team, regardless of if it’s a trap play or not.
