The Oilers are losers of two straight right now and both losses were at the hands of teams outside of the playoffs and they host the Rangers on Friday night who are the hottest team in the NHL.
The Rangers are 8-1-1 in their last ten games and have also won 6 straight. A little over a week ago they acquired Tarasenko from St. Louis and he’s fit like a glove.
This game has the makings of a barn burner, the last time these two met was in New York City and the Oilers won in very dramatic comeback fashion. I am sure the Rangers remember that one well and are motivated because of it.
This could very well be a preview of the finals if we’re lucky because it would make for some high flying hockey.
So, we take a closer look at the final matchup between these two.
New York Rangers
The Rangers as I said are on fire and look tough to stop at the moment, a super confident and talented team.
Offense
They’re 9th in the league in goals for per game and 9th in shooting percentage.

They’re also the 13th powerplay unit in the league but those numbers don’t reflect the octane at which they are operating in their last 10.
Defense
Defensively this team is very good both from the eye test with excellent players and by the numbers. Trouba since having a meltdown and throwing his helmet has looked like a man possessed and frequently makes the rounds on Twitter taking the body.
Goaltending
It appears that Igor Shesterkin will get the start for this one and why not, he’s playing other-worldly in between in the pipes and you gotta ride the hot streak right now in a Metro division that is an absolute dogfight.
Edmonton Oilers
.Edmonton had a terrible effort Sunday morning before the Super Bowl against the Habs and then had a bad outing against Detroit not necessarily for lack of effort, but was definitely not their night at least early on.
In the third period they poured it on and tied the game but it ultimately wasn’t enough.
Offense
Offensively, other than the two goals for in the Montreal game, the Oilers are still producing at an exceptional rate and are 1st in the NHL still in goals per game. As is their powerplay.
What’s interesting about tonight’s game is that head coach Jay Woodcroft says without hesitation that Kailer Yamamoto will play in this game as of yesterday’s press conference, which means that they have to get cap compliant, which further means someone has to go.
Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Athletic reported yesterday that the most likely scenario is that Holloway and Desharnais will get sent down to make room which is, bat-shit insane to me. Just end the Puljujarvi saga already Holland for crying out loud.
Defense
If Vincent Desharnais is sent down amidst his great play that has changed the dynamic of their own, against one of the top offensive juggernauts in the league, I think that could spell some trouble for them.
Goaltending
Jack Campbell was not good enough in the outing against Detroit and all signs point to Skinner getting the nod in this one, but keep an eye on it.

Free New York Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Prediction
Even with the two all-star goalies I believe we’re due for some chaos tonight. I tried to imagine a tight checking defensive battle and I just couldn’t do it.
What gives me pause to take a side here however is that the Oilers opened as favorites and then money came in on them, as losers of two straight to weaker opponents, over the hottest in the NHL which moved them to a slightly longer favorite.
Which means, I love this spot for the Rangers as a handicapper, and if you want that side I totally get it. But what also scares me about that is, do people know something I don’t here?
What I love most however is the steamed up over. 6.5 for these two feels like a gimme when we often see 8 in Oilers games so that’ll be the play for me tonight.
Hammer the over.
