Gotta love the subway series! The battle of the big apple in this one at the garden.
These two teams are on two entirely different trajectories right now. The Islanders to be fair had a covid and injury bug nightmare to deal with at the beginning of the season and they couldn’t play any games in their new rink due to construction not being finished.
I offer sympathy to the organization for that, tough situation. They didn’t find a way to overcome that adversity though and it has resulted in the loss of this season.
The Rangers on the other hand have all but locked up a 2 or 3 seed in the metropolitan division and are poised to go on a run.
So let’s look a little closer and figure out what we want to lay shall we?
New York Islanders
The Islanders are 24th in the league in goals per game with 2.47, 25th in the league in shots on goal with 29.5 and 21st in shooting percentage.

Their goaltending and defensive metrics are still pretty solid, but that style of play that we are used to seeing these Islanders succeed with under Trotz of playing structured defence each shift, turning pucks over and capitalizing on opportunities just is not working this season.
At some point you got to put pucks in the net and drive play otherwise you will sink.
New York Rangers
The Rangers are a team I am following closely right now because I truly think that they will be picking up someone for the ride into the playoffs. The other night when they played the Ducks, Anaheim kept both Lindholm and Rakell out of the lineup.
We have also seen that phenomena occur with Giordano and others around the league as the deadline approaches. Rickard Rakell would be a lethal addition for New York to bolster their secondary scoring if they miss on Patrick Kane or JT Miller or these other big names they are linked too.
