A pair of Metropolitan foes square off Saturday afternoon as the Flyers look to grab a win at home against the New Jersey Devils.

New Jersey
The New Jersey Devils would be one of the NHL’s best teams if they could muster even a halfway decent offense. The Devils have one of the NHL’s premier defenses and one of the NHL’s worst offenses.
The result thus far has been a tie with the Pittsburgh Penguins for 8th place in the crammed Eastern Conference.
Though the Devils find themselves clinging on to the conference’s final playoff spot, they’re still in the thick of the playoff picture trailing 4th place by just three points.
New Jersey is led by goaltender Cory Schneider who will be a Vezina Trophy candidate by the end of the season. Schneider is 2nd among goalies in GAA, 5th in save percentage, 6th in wins and 4th in shutouts.

He is having the best year of his young career and has single-handedly kept New Jersey in playoff contention.
The Devils are 1st in goals allowed, 9th in shots on goal allowed and 8th in penalty kill. Unfortunately, they’re also last in both goals scored and shots on goal.
Philadelphia
The Flyers are only a few points outside of the playoff picture but they aren’t playing very good hockey at the moment despite a 5-1 beatdown over the lowly Buffalo Sabres.
Philadelphia finds itself tied for 6th in the crowded Metropolitan Division with the Columbus Blue Jackets being the only team separating it from last place.
Still, the Flyers have played better than I think most people expected them to, especially on the road.
Goaltender Michal Neuvirth has been exceptional in net for the Flyers, but a string of injuries has forced Steve Mason to take over in net while Neuvirth gets healthy again.
Mason has shown flashes of quality goaltending this year even though his record might not show it.
His GAA of 2.70 is rather high, but he hasn’t gotten much help from the Philadelphia offense which ranks 25th in goals, 28th in shooting percentage and 29th in shots on goal.
The Flyers have also made a habit of shooting themselves in the foot with costly penalties.
Philadelphia’s 12.9 penalty minutes per game rank dead last in the NHL, and the team is 23rd in penalty kill because of all the time they’re forced to play shorthanded.

New Jersey has had three days of rest to prepare for this divisional matchup. The Devils’ top-ranked defense should get the better of a Flyers team that’s had a tough time scoring all season.
