The Devils are the latest team to make the trip north to play one of the Eastern Conference’s most prolific teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have been finding a way to get results even without their superstar centerman Auston Matthews, and sniper William Nylander who is in a holdout over a new contract. But the Devils have a little firepower of their own, not least of whom is last year’s MVP, Taylor Hall. Could be a dandy, with a few goals scored to boot.
New Jersey Devils
Last year, the Devils were all Taylor Hall, which contributed to his end-of-season hardware. So far in 2018-19, the scoring has been more balanced for Jersey. Still, the Devils started out hot (winning their first four games) but have crashed back to Earth lately, losing seven of their last nine contests. To get back in the happy side of the ledger, Jersey needs another big game from Kyle Palmieri, who leads the team with 10 goals, including five power-play markers.

We know Hall is money, and New Jersey has also had to hold on without starting netminder Cory Schneider, out with concussion problems. Backup ‘tendy Keith Kinkaid started out hot, but has turned into a pumpkin in recent weeks. Nico Hischier is an intriguing young talent, as is blueliner Will Butcher. There’s some talent in the cupboard for the Devils, but the return of an assured Schneider in net is critical to reverse this slide.
Toronto Maple Leafs
We know the Leafs are going to score enough, even sans Matthews. If goalie Freddie Andersen plays well, the Leafs are awfully tough to beat. The addition of centreman John Taveras in the off-season was obviously a game-changer, and fellow star Nazem Kadri seems to relish a more prominent role. Not that you hope for anyone’s injury, ‘Noz’, but let’s just say he doesn’t mind embracing an opportunity for more ice time.

Number one blueliner Morgan Reilly is looking like a possible Norris Trophy candidate early on, and his strong play is a rising boat that lifts all tides. If old farts like Patrick Marleau and Ron Hainsey can continue producing, Toronto shouldn’t have trouble weathering the storm until Matthews returns from a rather recurring shoulder ailment. If things are clicking, the Buds should be able to handle New Jersey on home ice.

Free New Jersey Devils vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Prediction:
Admittedly, this contest has all the makings of a trap game for Toronto. But the Leafs won in an ugly yet important way at the Scotiabank Centre in their last game versus Vegas, and Andersen certainly looked hot between the pipes in that one. If Andersen is on his game, the Leafs are too good for anybody unless your name is say, Tampa Bay or Nashville.
There are too many people on the Leafs roster than can burn you lately, even without a couple of stars. If well-regarded head coach Mike Babcock can get Matthews back to health and get Nylander either suited up or traded (and receive a fungible piece for him, say another defenceman) the Leafs’ll be a force to reckoned with. Sorry, Jersey Boys!
