Pittsburgh has picked up where they left off this season, coming off a shortened summer due to a Stanley Cup victory.
The Pens have gone 12-5-3 this season en route to a 2nd place standings in the Metropolitan Division, just four points back of the first place Rangers but with two games at hand.
New Jersey has relied, in large part, to their excellence at home and keeping the puck out of their own net to see their record to a 10-6-3 total through 19 games played.
The loss of Taylor Hall will hurt a team that is already struggling to score goals with the star winger in the lineup.
New Jersey Devils
The loss of Taylor Hall is significant, who sustained a knee injury and is expected to miss about a month. Hall led the team in scoring with 12 points in 14 games at the time of the injury, which has since been taken over by veteran center, Travis Zajac.
Zajac will need to continue to add to his 13 points with Hall out, as the club sits in 24th in the league in scoring with an average of just 2.3 goals scored per game.

Fellow veterans Mike Cammelleri, PA Parenteau, Adam Henrique and Kyle Palmeri will also need to step up their games.
Palmeri led the Devils in scoring in 2015-16 with 30 goals and 57 points in 82 games, but has tallied just three goals and seven points through 17 games played.
Henrique was second on the team last season with 30 goals of his own and 50 points, all of which he produced without Hall on his wing.
Hall and Henrique were junior teammates that have been reunited, but Henrique has recorded just eight points on the year so far through 19 games.
Cory Schneider is the Devils’ MVP so far this season, which comes as a surprise to no one. Schneider has a .920 SV% and 2.37 GAA on the year with a 7-5-2 record, which are very reminiscent to his stats from a year ago where he recorded a .924 SV% and a 2.15 GAA.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Sidney Crosby has helped the Penguins to an 8th overall standing for goals per game, where they average 3.0 per game on the year.
Crosby has Ovechkin-like numbers through his first 14 games this season, with 14 goals and 5 assists in that span.
Phil Kessel sits at the top of Pittsburgh’s stats page, with 20 points overall.
It appears that Kessel is liking his time in Pittsburgh, and who can blame home with the talent that’s surrounding him. Evgeni Malkin has collected 17 points and the Pens have 7 players overall in double-digit point totals.

Matt Cullen returned to Pittsburgh for one more year to have a shot and earning another Cup ring. The veteran center isn’t showing his age, as he’s chipped in 10 points of his own while manning the middle of the fourth line.
Marc-Andre Fleury has played in 14 games this season, recording a .907 SV% and a 3.18 GAA. Since the return of Matt Murray, though, has cut into Fleury’s workload, essentially causing a time-share between the two.
It’s Murray who has performed vastly better though, recording a .945 SV% and a 1.58 GAA in his seven appearances.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Pittsburgh has gone 7-2-1 at home this season.
- New Jersey has gone 7-0-1 at home this year, but just 3-6-2 on the road.
Free New Jersey Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Hockey Prediction
Without Hall in the lineup, it will be very difficult for the Devils to put up points.
This is especially true against a Penguins team that possesses the puck at a rate of 51.8% of the time.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Pittsburgh -1.5
While it’s always tough to score on Schneider, I don’t believe in the Devils’ offense at all and I do believe in Pittsburgh’s.
The Pens should be able to put up enough goals to give whichever goaltender mans the crease to earn the W.
