We shift to the Metropolitan to delve into this one between the second place Devils and wild card Islanders. I did make mention of the Islanders in my previous post saying they were “chugging along” and they do have an excellent home record this season and are 6-3-1 in their last ten, but they are losers of two straight games at the moment so they’re not safe whatsoever.
The Devils are 5-3-2 in their last ten games which is mediocre by their standards but 1st place in the division is in their sights and have been one of the top teams in the NHL wire to wire. There aren’t sufficient words in my native tongue to describe how excited I am for a potential first round series between this team and their arch rival Rangers who reside just across the Hudson River.
This is a must win for the Islanders, so their otherworldly netminder Ilya Sorokin will likely be in the cage and if it weren’t for Linus Ullmark I think this dude would win the Vezina, and potentially the Hart if it weren’t for you know who. What an unbelievable player he is.
So in a change of pace we look into this match-up that has plenty of playoff implications.
New York Islanders
This team’s identity hasn’t changed in a long time. They’re still that stingy, structured team that doesn’t score often but they work tirelessly to keep your options minimized and do a damn good job of it.
The latter is hyper emphasized with the aforementioned Sorokin in net who could do it even with a bad defensive unit in front of him, but they aren’t bad.

Offense
Offensively this team scores at a below average rate per game in fact it’s 22nd in the league with 2.96.

For context that’s only slightly better than the lottery hopeful Canadiens who we just discussed who sit at 2.84.
In my opinion when looking at this, and their potential first round opponent which is essentially guaranteed to be Boston but also possibly Carolina, it’s simply not good enough.
I don’t think that Boston will sweep this team, it will be tougher than the public will give it credit for is my prediction. But the fact remains this team doesn’t find twine often and I just don’t think that their systems and goalies will be sufficient enough.
Defense
But to get back to this game, I think it can be enough. Especially with how the Devils have been playing lately. They are 5th in the league this season in goals allowed per game and have remained around that spot the entire campaign.
Goaltending
Ilya. Sorokin.
New Jersey Devils
I love the freakin’ Devils for so many reasons. This is such a good hockey team and they will be this good for a long time.
They are actually similarly structured to NYI in the sense that they work incredibly hard, are very good defensively and they never abandon their game plan. Stylistically and systemically they aren’t super comparable teams but they share those three fundamental traits.
Offense
A massive difference however is that this Devils team can score at will and their goal production is a big part of what makes them so great. They couple their work ethic with elite talent and install it all inside a system that tethers each players skill-set together perfectly.
Jack Hughes just hit the 40-goal plateau, absolute stud and congrats to him.
Defense
Defensively they are one of the best in the league, full stop. They are tied with their opponent for 5th in the league in goals allowed per game, 5th in the league in shots allowed per game and their underlying numbers are even more impressive.
They limit high danger chances at an elite level which is something that really does not bode well for New York as they don’t create enough on their own.
Goaltending
This is perhaps the one flaw you can really nitpick with this team. Vanecek and Blackwood aren’t terrible by any stretch but they aren’t great either.
Both have injury history and both have trouble staying consistent which is my one question mark surrounding their hopes of going deep in the playoffs.

This one feels a bit riskier to me, I am a little less confident. But nevertheless I’m sticking with my program and taking the ever so slightly juiced total.
Given how good these teams are defensively, and how good Sorokin is, and how much this pick contradicts essentially everything I just said, I still like it because of the trends here and believe it or not the Islanders have scored 4 or more in four of their last five games including an absolute 7-2 drubbing of the Leafs.
That coupled with the high flying offense of New Jersey and their shaky goaltending, the pick is in, and it’s the over.
