There’s a good reason for this as well as both these teams deploy two of the best goalies in the entire world and the Islanders have arguably the very best in Ilya Sorokin. He is posting an absurd .933 save % which is second in the league behind only Ullmark of the B’s by a tiny fraction.
There’s been some line movement here as well, nothing massive but it’s worth noting that money came in on the Islanders immediately which juiced it to -160 in some places, but the Predators backers came in late and it’s now back to almost where it opened.
Line movement on individual games in the NHL is something I haven’t covered enough this season and I pledge to do so more moving forward, it’s obviously important information for all of us.
Nashville Predators
Nashville is always a tough evaluation for me and have been for many seasons after that run to the finals they had where they lost to Pittsburgh. On paper this team looks like a solid playoff team but due to lack of consistent production from their big boys they always seem to be a bubble team.
Now after a tough start to the year they have recently turned up the crank on their game and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, 5-0-1 in at home over that same stretch but a poor 1-3 on the road.
What is very telling as well is that in the same period of the aforementioned stats, they are 1-4-1 as a dog.
They also have a netminder duo that while it isn’t on par with the Isles’, it is certainly not far off either. We obviously know already of the perennial Vezina trophy candidate Juuse Saros, but their backup whose name you may have never heard Kevin Lankinen who I know little of as well, is having a damn good start to his year as a backup.
He is posting a 2.50 GAA and a .922 sv% which is incredible even in a limited amount of starts. To have these numbers in front of a team like Nashville who is having issues all over the ice is very impressive.
And that isn’t to take pot shots at the Preds, I actually really like this squad and find where they sit and how they are performing somewhat surprising. Jeannot doesn’t look like he did last season and he has to find his game for sure as do the rest of the big boys.
But this is a physical team with a ton of talent who should be playoff hopefuls even in what is a loaded Central Division.
New York Islanders
A team who isn’t having those problems, in fact they are kind of the exact opposite of the Predators, is the New York Islanders who very much like their counterparts in this one also play in a loaded division.
The Islanders are not without talent, but they are not considered to be an elite level offensive threat like other juggernauts in the league. Outside of Matt Barzal they don’t have any super stars that really jump out off the page at you.
But, that is not what this team has built itself to rely on to find success and I love it. I have always been a fan of this Islanders squad for a number of reasons but their commitment to their structure is in my opinion unmatched by anyone else in the NHL.
I think down the stretch they could use one more weapon to hang with big offensive juggs in the Eastern Conference, Patrick Kane has said some very complimentary things about Barzal in recent weeks and Blackhawks beat writer for the Athletic is strongly hinting he could be on the move.
But for now this team has found their own way to win games and that is stellar defensive play and unbelievable goaltending, paired with timely scoring and toughness.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Islanders 3-way 60 minute ML +105
I am going to take a shot at the 3 way line here with the Islanders based strictly on the poor play of the Predators offence right now and how good the Islanders are at preventing even good ones.
