Tonight we have Predators coming to town after a wicked road trip where the Oilers went 3-0 and are currently on a 4 game heater. The Preds on the other hand are struggling outta the gate with their same old issues rearing their ugly heads.
The Oilers aren’t without their own issues even during their hot streak here one of which we will dive into closely in this write up. And there is a lot of talk in Edmonton about possible trades to address some of these problems.
One thing that is not an issue right now is goaltending, 1st year Stuart Skinner is leading the NHL in save % and is going to be the regular starter as long he’s hot because why the hell would you do anything else.
This has not been a luxury Edmonton has had in many years and after spending big money on Jack Campbell in the off-season (a deal I said here we would regret) not many had predicted that this would happen this early.
Nevertheless, both netminders are getting wins and despite Campbell’s bad numbers he does seem to come up with big timely saves to either preserve a lead or keep the boys in it.
On the other end of the rink there’s my prediction to win the Vezina this year Juuse Saros who is off to a solid start numbers wise but does not have the wins. But regardless he will be a serious test for this high octane Oilers offence.
So, let’s dive into this one closer and find the right side.
Nashville Predators
The Predators offence is in shambles right now. Their power play is 30th in the NHL, shooting percentage is dead last and their goals per game is 29th.
This team has some great players which has always surprised me about the lack of success after that final against Pittsburgh. But to continue to run it back with this squad seems like a mistake at this point.
The acquisition of Ryan McDonagh hasn’t totally moved the needle for their defence either as they reside in the middle of the pack out of the gate in SOG allowed and goals allowed.
These are not promising numbers heading into this one against the Oilers who has an offence that is hummin’ right now.
Edmonton Oilers
Now since this cannot be all complimentary for the Oilers let’s look at what has gone wrong if you’re thinking of getting on the Preds side tonight.
The Oilers defensive structure is once again dreadfully awful and is very frustrating to watch both as a backer of theirs and a fan. Against the Flames on Saturday in what ended up being a win one particular goal scored by Brett Ritchie was off a won puck battle behind our own net and passed to him WIDE open in the slot.
Not only was he unchecked but Evan Bouchard was ALSO behind the net on the WEAK side of the net staring at the puck battle taking place presumably waiting for it to pop out to him.
I love the Bouch Bomb but that is just flat out unacceptable. Literally peewee shit that NHL’ers are simply not allowed to do.
Jack Campbell is also reportedly getting the nod for tonight who as I mentioned before does not have great stats to begin the year. Posting a 3.88 GAA and .888 sv % which is certainly not his best and I am sure he’s motivated to improve.
