I haven’t covered the Habs a lot this season but I can’t wait to dig into this one. One of my betting rules in hockey is that I do not like betting on two bad teams, not to throw shade at the Habs I love them as a group but their struggles make it tough to back them financially and also in games where they play relative opponents things are too up in the air to handicap.
Having said that, there are certain plays you obviously can look at, for example totals which is perhaps a lame foreshadow to where I am going with this (you can see the line and you know what I have been up to all season so if you’re a regular reader it’s not hard to figure out), but there could be some fun props as well especially against their divisional rival Buffalo.
The Sabres are still technically in the hunt for a wild card spot in the east but it looks like it’s essentially out of reach now as they are running out of race track and the Pens, Isles and Panthers keep chugging along. But this group plays inspired hockey night in and night out.
So let’s dive into this one, two of the most exciting teams to watch this season, records notwithstanding.
Buffalo Sabres
I’ve covered the Sabres quite a bit this year and there’s truly a lot to like. I’m super disappointed that they are likely to miss the playoffs because they are so fun to watch, have a ton of young talent and much like the way I feel about the Senators I think it would be so beneficial for the young core to taste the post-season a talking point as old as time I know but there’s truth to it.
Offense
Offensively this team is very gifted. I watched them play the Devils on the 24th where they won 5-4 and for a brief moment that terrified Sabres fans, Tage Thompson exited the ice after taking an awkward hit but they continued to dominate the pace before he returned.

Dylan Cozens is quietly approaching the 30 goal mark which he will hit and doesn’t get enough credit for the player he is.
Defense
Defensively this team has a lot to improve on by the numbers but I still like a lot of their personnel namely the obvious ones being Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. Power much like his teammate Cozens is playing second fiddle and doesn’t get a ton of love.
But he’s +8 on a team that’s 29th in the NHL in goals allowed per game at 3.68. That is impressive.
He only played 8 games in the NHL last season therefore he qualifies as a rookie technically and in my view should be in the discussion with Matty Beniers as a Calder Trophy candidate.
Goaltending
It stands to reason that Luukkonen will get the start in this one as it is technically still a must win if they want to stay in the race and despite his numbers not being great this season, he’s definitely their best option and I think he’s a promising goalie for the future but for the sake of Buffalo’s success they cannot bank on it, you gotta address that position this summer.
Montreal Canadiens
The Habs are absolutely decimated with injuries right now. It’s super unfortunate no matter what, you always want to see healthy rosters but in this case it’s particularly lousy because the list includes many of their key young studs like Cole Caufield and Kaiden Guhle who are out for the season with legit injuries.
Offense
This squads goals per game average is relatively low at 2.84 which is 26th in the NHL, certainly not what they were aiming for this season but I think we all agree we can give them mulligan considering the fact that they do not stack up to their division opponents and they’ve been plagued with the aforementioned injury bug all year.
Even with all that in mind though this squad still has the ability to fill the net on a moments notice, it happens pretty often where they all of a sudden explode case in point the over has hit in 8 of their last 11 games.
Defense
Defensively they’re a mess and they aren’t getting great goaltending from Jake Allen this season, definitely not all his fault obviously but his sv% is down quite a bit from his career average at .891% so they’re bleeding goals each game. That being said they are actually one spot ahead of the Sabres though in goals allowed per game.
Goaltending
Jake Allen is expected to start as well but monitor this as we get into tomorrow of course.
