So this is going to be a bit of a series preview as well as the game 1 match-up. As well all know with 7 game series betting we have to account for both come playoff time.
I also give you my word I will not be completely bias as an Oilers fan, in fact I think this series is a bit tighter than the line reflects as well as what most are saying online.
As an Oilers fan and analyst/blogger, I really believe that of all the teams they could’ve drawn in this part of the bracket that the Kings are the toughest match-up for them stylistically and I will explain why.
If any team has a mold to stop the two very best offensive centermen in the NHL, it’s the team that has the two vert best defensive centermen in the NHL.
Anze Kopitar and Philip Danault are elite two way forwards that at least in part have the tools to be a thorn in McDavid and Draisaitls sides. Mcdavid for reference had only 3 points in 4 games this year against them which by his standards is awful.
The Kings are also going to have Doughty, Arvidsson and Fiala in the fold which they didn’t last year.
Now with that being said, the Oilers are much improved as well. Leon is heathy, they added Ekholm, some excellent depth pieces and have reliable goaltending.
I think this one is going to be an absolute banger again, likely to go 6 or more given the hatred between these two. The Kings will be hungry for some revenge and won’t be an easy out for the Oilers although I do think they ultimately take it.
So, let’s get into it a little deeper shall we.
Edmonton Oilers
Undoubtedly this squad has been one of the very best and arguably the absolute best team in the league since January 1st and certainly since the acquisition of Matthias Ekholm.
Their goaltending with Jeff Skinner although unproven is stable and reliable. He will not be giving up the garbage ones like Smith last year that demoralizes the group and forces them to need a plethora of goals.
Offense
What could be the Kings kryptonite in this series is this historic powerplay because of how poor their own penalty kill is.

A meager 75% is just simply not going to suffice against Edmonton in a series that could get ugly at times. This Oilers peeper is just disgustingly good and cannot be stopped by anyone right now.
Defense
Defensively both as a fan and as an armchair scout is why I think this team is going to get to the finals. Ekholm has done a number of things positively to this team.
Most notably are picking up Bouchards slack and taking a massive load off Darnell Nurse who has been so good the last while.
The depth does concern me slightly, if someone’s game goes cold or somebody gets hurt, the Oilers are not the Leafs in terms of NHL caliber defenceman on the roster and that will be a question mark.
But no doubt this team has addressed a major concern from earlier this season.
Goaltending
As I touched on earlier, Skinner has become what the Oilers wanted Campbell to be. Steady and reliable and does not have to be a world beater because the team in front of him is very good.
Los Angeles Kings
The Kings are a bit of a tough evaluation heading into the playoffs as they’ve cooled off after being unbelievable most of the last half of the season. They’re still a great team built well for playoff hockey but their inability to get some crucial wins over division rivals in the last couple weeks is somewhat concerning.
Offense
Offensively they get the job done by committee, but they do have some pretty good weapons up front. The two I mentioned earlier, Kempe, Byfield and Fiala if he’s healthy can all be dynamic forwards.
Defense
Defensively this team addressed a need on the left hand side with Gavrikov and he’s been a perfect fit since being in Kings colors. Their mix of youth and experience bodes really well for them this time of year.
Goaltending
Also in that trade they got themselves their guy in net, Jonas Korpisalo whose been excellent.

I’m sticking with the hot team here. It’s a new series, and the regular season doesn’t matter anymore, but I still think how you’re currently playing does at the very least kind of matter.
So give me the Oilers puckline, getting game 1 done at home.
