UPDATE: I previously reported here that Quick was starting in this game, but since publishing it has been confirmed that Cal Petersen will be getting the start, my apologies. Stuart Skinner is up for the Oilers.
Lowetide of The Athletic reported this morning that it’s quote “time for the Oilers to trade for an established defenceman” which is something I have been saying for 6 months, not to do an endzone dance necessarily it just pisses me off.
The injury and early season struggles of Philip Broberg have interrupted Ken Holland’s schedule for this team and his development. He’s slated to come to the big club in early December.
His play, the play of the Kraken and Flames, and where the Oilers sit in the standings in the next 4 weeks will dictate whether or not Holland decides to make a trade.
In my honest opinion, this team does not have that much time. It needs to be done now.
The Kings are actually a really good team but they have struggled to put it together consistently which is a lot similar to the Oil obviously. Quick is starting in this one and his numbers have fallen off.
They do not score at the clip the Oilers do but they have less underlying flaws and are a more well rounded roster.
So, let’s take a closer look at this one tonight.
Los Angeles Kings
The Kings offence is actually really impressive by the eye test. They could finish the year with 4 or more 20 goal scorers.
They are scoring 3.33 goals per game at the moment, they win over half of their faceoffs and have a shooting percentage of 10.3 which is good for 7th overall.
What is a weakness for them this season and particularly heading into this one against a high octane offence like the Oil, is that they are giving up 3.5 goals per game to opponents.
Johnny Quick is having a rough year so far by the numbers after having a pretty solid start. But his line right now is 3.09 GAA and a .873 sv %, 6-4 record.
It’s not bottom of the barrel but it’s not what he’s capable of either so if the Kings want to stay in the thick of the hunt which they currently are they’ll have to get Quick going.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers wrapped up a road trip in a tough region of the league 2-2. They would obviously want better but considering who they played and the flaws this team has as well as injuries, 500 on that trip isn’t bad at all.
They still score at an incredibly high rate, 3.69 goals per game to be specific and it’s tied for 4th in the NHL. They give up slightly less per game which plays into the narrative on how they can “outscore their issues most nights”.
But that just isn’t that true unfortunately. 9-7 is not where this Oilers team expected to be at this stage and they need a win streak soon here to make up some ground in the Pacific division.
As I mentioned earlier, the surging Kraken are jamming a stick in the wheel of everyone’s expectations on what the division was going to look like and they deserve the success for sure.
Plus, the Golden Knights are all the way back and are hanging at the top of the standings and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere.
But to come full circle back to this particular matchup, the LA Kings are also sitting in third right now and are in a battle with the Oilers for a Wild Card position.
I realize it’s way too early to be talking about jockeying for playoff position, but these games are going to start to really matter for the Oilers and Kings who have similar records a lot earlier than they’d hoped.
