I’m really excited to watch this one tomorrow night post Oilers/Bruins. A little pre-playoff scouting for myself.
The Kings are a better team than they were before the deadline. And they are taking a ton of flack for trading Quick and doing it the way they did, I’m unsure if it’s warranted or not but sounds like the Kings players were devastated after a win and a 4 goal night for Kopitar so maybe truth to it.
But the pickups of Gavrikov and Korpisalo from Columbus absolutely addressed two needs for their lineup. Obviously goaltending has been a struggle and their left side lacked depth.
The Avs were relatively quiet at the deadline but I like the ad of Lars Eller, can play center and wing and adds some punch to their bottom 6, tons of experience.
So let’s take a closer look at this one and try to find the angle.
Colorado Avalanche
The Avs dropped three straight recently but in their last ten games they’re 7-3 so not too shabby obviously.
This team is not what they were last year, they’re still very good, but just not the same. And in fairness it has a ton to do with injuries as we all know and once they get their captain back and get fully healthy we all assume they’ll be the toughest out in the west.
But there’s just no getting around the fact that they don’t look as dominant as they did last season, the Stanley Cup hangover might be in effect here.
Offense
They are right in the middle of the pack in goals per game at 16th with 3.13 which is not terrible at all but not exactly what we expect from them and the rest of their numbers are also a little uninspiring, for example.

They are 22nd in the NHL in shooting percentage with 9.5, and 8th in shots on goal per game with an average of 33 pucks on net per game. With all that high end skill those numbers don’t exactly give you a ton of confidence as a bettor.
Defense
Defensively they aren’t anything to write home about either but are a very respectable 10th in the NHL in goals allowed per game with 2.8, a lot has to do with the play of Georgiev which is perhaps an inept segue onto our next topic.
Goaltending
Boy does Sakic look smart for this move. I love Georgiev and he’s been great for the Avs this season and really hasn’t gotten a ton of love.
He’s expected for this one.
Los Angeles Kings
I have yet to watch the Kings play a game with their new acquisitions and I’m excited to watch this game for that reason alone. I don’t think Gavrikov was going to be worth the 1st Edmonton was reportedly going to give up, but this fit makes a lot of sense for LA since they got the added benefit of a solid goaltender.
If they can get these guys resigned for a reasonable price which is a possibility I think this trade is a win.
Offense
I love this forward group a lot, no real bonafide superstars perse but a ton of depth and a ton of skill especially at center the most important position in hockey. Kopitar, Danault, Lizotte, Kupari are so solid and their wingers aren’t anything to shake a stick at either.
Kempe is a stud, Byfield has been great and the Fiala pickup has paid dividends. I really like this squad.
Defense
I really like this teams 1 through 6 as well. I have never liked Edler as a player he’s a bit of a scumbag and lacks footspeed, but he’s super competitive, super tough and battles hard every night. Doughty still looks great in the back nine of his career and their young guys are going to take over just fine when the vets leave town.
Goaltending
A position of weakness for this team all year long, they had a carousel of starters similar to Vegas had which is where their franchise netminder Jonathan Quick landed back on March 3rd. Jonas Korpisalo comes in to try and settle things down.

Free Los Angeles Kings vs. Colorado Avalanche NHL Prediction
The Kings are on a tear of their own right now and so this is a tough one to handicap, but I think all things considered I am going to take the Kings in an upset here.
It’s the riskier play for sure but worth a shot here.
