Two Western Conference teams will do battle in Colorado, each of which is currently sitting on the outside of a playoff seed looking in.
LA will look to defeat the league’s worst team, the Colorado Avalanche, and leap back into a wildcard spot they’ve recently fallen out of.
Los Angeles Kings
The Kings currently sit two points back of the Calgary Flames for the final wildcard spot in the West, though with one more game at hand heading into the last quarter of the season.
Despite losing star goaltender, Jonathan Quick, since the start of the season the Kings have ranked favorably in goals against. They currently sit in 4th overall in the category, allowing an average of just 2.4 against per game.

This is in large part due to the play of fill-in netminder, Peter Budaj, who started the year in the AHL. This season, Budaj has registered a 2.14 GAA and a .916 SV% with a 26-19-3 record and seven shutouts.
Drew Doughty is once again logging huge minutes for the Kings on the backend, averaging 27:15 TOI per game. He currently sits in fourth on the team in points with 32.
Jeff Carter has put the Kings’ offense on his back this season and carried them to respectability. Carter is the only King with more than 33 points, and currently ranks second in the NHL in goals on the year with 29.
Carter ranks 13th in the league point total race with 53.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado sits dead last in the league in both goals per game and goals against, not a recipe for success.
The last place Avalanche sit an astounding 12 points back of the 29th ranked Arizona Coyotes, and look like a lock to have the highest odds come draft lottery time.
Unfortunately for Colorado, this draft is not expected to be a strong year, with the consensus among scouts claiming there is no franchise player available.
The Avs will need to stock pile picks to try to acquire good young talent and hope their selections hit big.
The team may also look to acquire and improve in areas of need via trade, with GM Joe Sakic publically stating that anyone on the team not named Nathan MacKinnon or Mikko Rantanen could be had for the right price.
The backend is a huge area of need, so seeing a deal for a top blueliner for the likes of a Gabriel Landeskog or Matt Duchene is a legitimate possibility nearing the deadline.

Seymon Varlamov may be nearing the end of his service time with the Avs, as the netminder has conceded the majority of the starts to the younger, Calvin Pickard. Pickard owns a .908 SV% and a 2.91 GAA, not great numbers by any means but look at the team he is playing behind.
His numbers do best those of Varlamov, who has a .898 SV% and a 3.38 GAA on the year.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Kings rank 4th in goals against at 2.4 on average
- Los Angeles have only won 1 of their last 6 games
- LA is 13-16-3 on the road this year
- With 29 goals, Jeff Carter sits in 2nd place in the goal scoring race behind only Sidney Crosby.
- Colorado has the worst goal differential in the league at -77
- Colorado is just 7-19-2 at home this year
