The Sens are truly one of my favorite teams to watch this year. They are an incredibly feisty bunch, they bring each other into the fight and make every game interesting win or loss.
Their recent bout against the Lightning really demonstrated how pesky they truly are. At the end of the second frame it was 23-8 in shots and the Sens were up 2-1 if I remember correctly.
They still have poor defence and are missing their top centermen Josh Norris and yet they still seem to be giving teams a tough time regardless of who they are.
Which brings me to their toughest test yet, the red hot Vegas Knights.
Funny enough the Knights are actually middle of the pack this year in goals per game at 15th with 3.18, the Sens? 5th with 3.67. Defence and goaltending is actually their calling card right now which is puzzling.
Everyone knows their defensive unit is good but have struggled in recent memory and nobody predicted Logan Thompson would have the start he’s having and make no mistake about it, he is on fire.
So without further ado, let’s dig in.
Las Vegas Golden Knights
The big difference between these two squads is the blue line. The Knights have been rock solid so far at defending the rush, limiting high danger chances and have just surpassed the Devils for the league lead in SOG per game allowed.
And when they do allow an opportunity Thompson has been there to shut the door. He has a 5-2 record, 1.73 GAA, and .909 sv %. Unbelievable.
What’s more is that we frequently see the Golden Knights activate their blueline in the offensive zone. Most nights you’ll see a highlight with Shea Theodore or Alex Pietrangelo chipping in for crucial goals or assists.
They have a very balanced attack which could be due to the coaching change (which seems to have benefitted both the Knights, and Bruins as they’re the top two teams in the league. More on the Bruins another time.) and as long as they can continue to get decent goaltending make no mistake about this team is ready to contend again after a disappointing season last year.
Ottawa Senators
With everything I do love about the Sens there is a lot to dislike as well. Their defensive game needs a ton of work not just upgrading their personnel at the position.
Their penalty kill is atrocious and they take the most penalties in the league. I legit put my tinfoil hat on for the game against the Lightning because it was a parade to the box on some incredibly weak calls making me think the refs were paid off to get the Bolts out of their slump.
But nevertheless you’ll just almost always lose games like that, need to clean that up ASAP.
And beyond that, they allow a ton of chances in dangerous areas among being a league leader in shots allowed and goals allowed. This all spells trouble for the Senators in this one.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Vegas Knights ML -140
I love the Knights in this spot as short road favourites. Anton Forsberg’s GAA matches the Knights average goals for at 3.18, and the Senators allow more shots on goal on average than the Knights actually tack on to the score sheet.
This is a nice little recipe to get the Knights at this price for an easy win, I would even look at their 60 minute lines. But be weary, as I said this Sens team does not go down without a fight.
They are frisky, but gimme the Knights.
