Both of these clubs boast 8-2 records in their last ten and in doing so the Knights are making it damn near impossible for teams like Edmonton and Los Angeles who are also playing great to catch them for the Pacific division lead.
It’s games like this that teams like Edmonton have to win if they have aspirations of winning said division which should make this one a real entertaining bout Saturday night.
As the year has gone on I’ve grown a little fatigued with the “Pacific Division is worst in hockey” narrative. The top 3 teams in the Pacific right now can absolutely hang with the top 3 in the Central.
Beyond the playoff teams, sure it’s a lot of bottom feeders and I wouldn’t argue it’s ranked 4th but this race for the Pacific is a three headed snake that looks like it will come down to game 82 making for some very interesting hockey just like the Metro, Central and Atlantic.
So, let’s take a closer look at these two divisional foes and figure out what market we like shall we?
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton is on a 5 game heater and have been one of the best teams in the NHL since January and definitely since the deadline and yet all I see online is hatred and criticism of this group. It’s a really toxic fan base, local media, and I would say their detractors are the most toxic in the league which is likely why it’s hard to retain and attract good players.
I will admit, that I can be hard on this group myself as a handicapper especially when I evaluate their defending, so in this iteration of my Oilers blog let’s do the positives.
Offense
We really have run out of superlatives to describe how good this team is up front. And with McLeod looking like he’s ready to return to the lineup it’s generated the ‘who do you take out of the lineup’ dialogue showing that the squads depth up front is better than it has been in years.

He was still in a non contact jersey today at practice so we’ll see if he draws into the lineup, if not I would imagine that Woodcroft elects to go with the 11-7 formation to help shut down the likes of this Knights offence that is absolutely buzzing right now.
Defense
Defensively I have seen a lot of good performances from many of the Oiler defenders but I want to quickly shine a light on a guy who never gets discussed and that is Philip Broberg.
Digging into his numbers he has a pretty low event game but I think that’s mostly due to how he is utilized by his coaches and I see a player who would likely flourish if his role was expanded. His physical tools are as good or better than any defencemen that they employ, he’s fast, he’s fluid, strong on the puck, good hands and has a very keen knack for getting into shooting lanes.
You can also see his confidence building with each passing game, he’s more likely to hold onto the puck and make a skill play than in his earlier days when his decision making that scared some in the draft away from selecting him sort of reared it’s head.
Goaltending
Skinner has been playing very well lately in relief of their defacto number 1 (at least he’s paid that way). I do wonder however about how much he’s playing and if that will catch up to him which would be back breaking for this team heading into the playoffs given that Campbell is essentially unplayable at the moment.
Las Vegas Golden Knights
The Knights are figuring out ways to play with a depleted goaltending lineup which is incredibly impressive and it’s in large part due to their defensive structure and roster which I will highlight here.
First of all, the way this team has structured their defending system is unlike most in the league. They play a lot of man to man coverage which I would really like to see more teams do (most of all the Oilers). They aren’t as worried with protecting the standard patches of ice that defenders are expected to protect so much as they are concerned with covering individual players.
It’s really a treat to watch when executed well and as a result they limit high dangers at an elite rate, which makes a goalies job much easier.
Secondly, they have arguably the best personnel on the blue line in the entire NHL.

Somethings gotta give in this one. It feels to me like a very, very tight match-up, one that is pretty difficult to handicap which is why the juice on the Oil seems a little rich to me. Perhaps some good value on the Vegas side.
On the other hand I do really like this match-up for Edmonton stylistically. If Kane can get going on the top unit and with Hyman sliding down to the second, it will give the VGK blue line (albeit a very good one) some headaches all evening long.
The most important dynamic in this one is, you guessed it, the goalies. It appears that Logan Thompson is unavailable after finally returning this week which means it would likely be Quick getting tapped on the shoulder but it’s Vegas so who knows.
And then there’s Skinner on other hand who is playing very well but he’s still an inexperienced rookie and being heavily relied upon right now.
With all of that in mind, I will be on the over 6.5 -120 for this one. Y’all know how much I love juiced totals so get this one right now as it’s likely to get steamed by tomorrow morning.
