So I am red hot finding spots in Oilers games as are the Oilers winning games. They played what I think is one of if not their most impressive games of the season last night and beat the Lightning at their own game when the wanted to take the game in a greasy direction when they got down early.
The Lightning are the Lightning and they did make their way back into the game but Connor McDavid did what he does and scored an electric go ahead goal early in the third period and they capped it off with a late empty netter from Hyman to seal the deal.
I’ve repeated this a few times during this stretch so I apologize for being a broken record but this truly is the best hockey the Oilers have played all season and they look like they did in the playoffs last May.
Why The Oilers Are Clicking
It’s no secret that the Oilers struggle defending and even since the call up of Desharnais which has been a huge success, Nurse and Ceci continue to get caved in most nights including last night. This streak should not eliminate the prospect of shoring up this blueline come trade deadline time because Nurse and Ceci are an awful shutdown pair against elite competition.
At any rate, the red hot Oilers are taking on the tire fire Vancouver Canucks who we will get into next LOL, on the road tomorrow night. Without further ado, let’s dive in.
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are a disaster right now and it’s honestly unfortunate coming from someone who has hated them with a passion since Pavel Bure left their squad.

Since the Sedin’s, Bieksa, and Burrows left Vancouver I have relinquished my hate for them and have found myself liking them for a number of seasons and I truly wanted to see Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg all being playoff teams and cup contenders for this window.
The Canucks, unless they make some very important and much needed trades in the next couple of months before the deadline they will likely be awful for the next decade. I hope they do the right thing for Elias and Quinn’s sake who are stuck there for awhile, but Rutherford is clinging stubbornly to the “re-tool” idea so we shall see.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are on top of their game right now and have five straight to get themselves within three points of first place in the Pacific. The sky was falling not too long ago but the tables turned very quickly thanks to the weak division and the Knights fall from grace back down to earth.
The Oilers are primed to make the leap in the coming 10 games as their next 7 are against the; Canucks, Blue Jackets, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Flyers, Senators, Canadiens.
Now it’s hard to see any team in the NHL win seven straight against anyone but there is absolutely a path here for the Oilers who are better than all of these rosters just objectively. On the flip side, if the Oilers come back down to their level prior to his win streak which is also very much a possibility we could see them in turmoil yet again.
Depth Scoring
20 of their last 21 goals have come at 5on5 which is a great sign for this squad who a lot of the time prior to this win streak relied on the power play to get things going for themselves. And they are getting tons of production right now from the bottom 6 particularly Ryan McLeod who has 4 goals in his last 7 games.
