In his second year in the league, newly annoited captain Connor McDavid has led his Edmonton Oilers to a second-place standing in the entire NHL with a 7-2 record.
After a big off-season for the franchise that shifted the personnel group significantly, the changes appear to be paying dividends.
Fellow #1 overall pick a year later, Auston Matthews, is essentially experiencing the same rookie season that McDavid did a year ago.
The blame cannot be placed on Matthews for his team’s current woes that have them siting in the bottom of the Atlantic Division, as he’s currently tied for ninth overall in league scoring and just two points back of first.
Edmonton Oilers
Sitting tied for first overall in league scoring with Claude Giroux, Connor McDavid has quickly become, arguably, the game’s biggest offensive superstar.
He’s played one less game than his co-leader, Giroux, and five of his 12 points have been goals compared to Giroux’s two.
Joining the Oilers this year is Milan Lucic, who plays alongside McDavid and has provided some much needed toughness and protection for the youngster while bringing a ton of playoff and winning experience.
Lucic has chipped in four goals and seven points playing wing alongside the young superstar.
Also adding some size up front are Patrick Maroon, Zack Kassian and their first round selection from this past draft, Jesse Puljujarvi.
All of the aforementioned players have been brought in since GM Peter Chiarelli has taken over the reigns, after leaving the Bruins organization, where he assembled a Stanley Cup winner that was a nightmare to play against.

Cam Talbot has been a revelation between the pipes this year, solidifying a long-standing problem area for the Oilers.
On the season, Talbot has a .936 SV% and 2.04 GAA to go along with his 7-2 record on the season.
I would expect him to get a break in this game though, as he’s started every game for Edmonton and they’re facing a favorable matchup to play their backup, Jonas Gustavsson, who happens to be a former Leaf.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto is on the right path to being respectful once again, however they are still early on in the process.
They’ve drafted some nice young players in William Nylander, Morgan Reilly, Mitch Marner, and of course, Auston Matthews, all of whom have performed admirably this season.
Nylander actually leads the club in scoring with 11 points in his nine games, playing alongside Matthews who has 10 himself.
Marner has looked every bit the dynamic player he was in junior, and has silenced his critics who questioned whether or not his skill would transition or if his size would rule him ineffective against NHL competition.
Matthews looks like the real deal early on, at one point sitting in 1st in league scoring and it should be fun to watch him take on the man who currently sits atop of the point lead, Connor McDavid.

The Leafs dealt a first round pick and Jonathan Bernier for goaltender, Frederik Andersen, in the off-season.
Andersen has the luxury of playing behind a strong Ducks’ team the past few years to start his career, but it hasn’t been as easy for him in Toronto. Andersen currently owns a .876 SV% and 3.67 GAA on the year in his seven starts.
It’s interesting to note that Bernier, the former “Leafs goalie of the future” has a .929 SV% and 3.03 GAA in two starts in Anaheim this year.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- The Maple Leafs are 2-1 at home this season.
- The Leafs have scored 3 or more goals in six of their nine games.
- The Oilers are 6th in the NHL in goals per game at 3.2.
Free Edmonton Oilers vs Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Hockey Prediction
While I lilke the Oilers to win here, I like the over better. As noted above, the Leafs have been able to point points on the board despite their poor win-loss record.
Edmonton has been scoring at a great clip, also having three or more goals in six of their nine games.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
Andersen and the Leafs haven’t shown they can keep the puck out of the back of their net so far.
While Talbot has, he’ll likely be taking a back seat to his back up in this matchup, Jonas Gustavsson, who has yet to start game this season so who knows how bad the rust will be.
