The Oilers are coming off a nice win and performance against the red hot Pittsburgh Penguins to end their lengthy six game homestand to start the season.
I am 0-2 this season writing about my beloved Oilers and my last post was rather emotional LOL, so once again take the following with a grain of salt. Except this time will be straight and no horsing around. I promise.
The Oilers actually fell into an early hole against Pitt despite scoring the ever elusive first goal off of a great pass from Bouchard to spring Hyman on a breakaway.
The Penguins scored 3 unanswered after that two of which came from poor defensive structure. The Rakell powerplay marker, granted was a beautiful shot but Campbell was screened by his own defender Ryan Murray.
And then Crosby goal, both Nurse and Draisaitl failed to recognize Crosby streaking into the slot and as a result he tapped in a one timer. But Woodcroft threw the lines in a blender in the second period which was partly as a result of McDavid leaving the ice due to injury and the Oilers did not look back after that.
The Blues are the tightest checking team in the league as we saw two games ago when I had the Oilers puckline and they got shutout. So without further ado let’s dive in a little closer.
Edmonton Oilers
It does concern me a little that Woodcroft has in every game thrown the lineup card out the window and shuffled the deck looking for a spark.
It’s obviously a part of the game but great teams don’t typically need to do it as often as the Oilers are this season. Consistency is important in a long season and it seems as though nobody is really getting enough time together to develop any serious chemistry.
The Oilers are also not playing physical enough which isn’t a part of their identity but against a team like St. Louis I would like to see Kane (who is leading the NHL in hits ironically), Nurse and others with that sandpaper in their game play a little meaner.
One guy who is dishing out the punishment is Markus Niemeläinen and has looked pretty solid so far in a limited role. I wonder if the lineup card will look like the way the Penguins game ended.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues are looking like they are absolutely for real this season. Coming off a loss they look to bounce back at home.
The Blues are a bit old school in their approach they play a stingy and structured game that does not give up a lot of high danger chances. The Oilers struggled to get any quality chances inside the slot in their previous meeting and unless they change up their approach that could very well happen again tonight.

In the previous game we saw such a tight checking game that resulted in a 2-0 game with one of the goals being an empty netter, and now they’re giving us even money on this under the total 6.5?
I’ll take my chances on that. I know it’s not wise betting on what has happened previously necessarily but this is the only way I see tonight.
