What’s up guys, so sorry I disappeared for a bit there. My computer crashed last weekend so I am currently using a loner tablet to pump out some picks for ya!
You guys don’t care about the house cleaning though, all we care about is winners. In this one we have the Oilers visiting the Kraken who they just overtook in the Pacific Division.
The Kraken have been steadily collecting points this season and are still a very solid and pesky team but below average goaltending is starting to bite them in the ass. The Oilers goalies overall aren’t much better, but Skinner’s numbers are good and they Oilers are rolling with him right now every game, and the addition of Ekholm has greatly improved their defensive play so they are now on the rise in the right areas.
I definitely give the advantage the former in this one but this has been a really entertaining season series so far and both these teams are going to get up for this one for bragging rights in the division. They could very well meet in the playoffs at some point as well.
So, after a few days off I am back on it ya degens so let’s get after it.
Seattle Kraken
I do like the Kraken, but upon digging into their numbers today I get the sense that they might be overachieving a bit and that some regression could be on the horizon at the absolute worst time of year.
Offense
Offensively this team isn’t particularly stacked with gifted forwards but they have several very good, and hard working ones including rookie sensation Matty Beniers. They are tied for 5th in the league in goals per game with 3.47 and they get it done democratically.

But their goal totals both individually and as a team have started to cool and their other major metrics are all mediocre or below average.
Defense
This team’s strength is that they do not allow many shots on net which they’re going to need against Edmonton, but they also are very poor on the penalty kill which spells bad news for them.
Goaltending
Grubrauer is having a nightmarish season and I feel for the guy but he is coming off a win over SJ where he had a .970 save %. Martin Jones is also having a tough year and it’s unconfirmed which guy is going to start for this one.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are 6-4-1 in their last ten games but playing some of their best hockey still. Despite the criticisms I still hold against them for the moves they made or the lack thereof, they without a doubt are a better team post trade deadline.
Offense
This attack is so lethal there’s just really no stopping it. Going into last night’s game against Dallas I was honestly a little nervous about how good that Stars blueline is and the Oilers toyed with them save for the first five minutes.
Their shooting % is 1st in the NFL, powerplay is historically good, and their goals per game is also 1st. They’re fast, they’re skilled but worst of all for opponents they are relentless and work hard.
The problem with them is consistency and I know that sounds so silly since they’ve been 1st in those categories wire to wire but game to game and period to period they can sometimes have trouble keeping their foot on the gas.
Defense
So the positives first.
Mattias Ekholm is +7 in his last 5 games and has 9 blocked shots. He averages just over 20 minutes a night and has done two crucial things to this Oiler blue line.
He has made Bouchard a much more confident and competent defenceman and he has also brought Darnell Nurse’s numbers way down which he has in turn benefited from. That alone is almost worth losing Tyson Barrie, he’s an excellent addition and has made this team a serious threat in the West.
Unfortunately the Oilers without him on the ice are still very prone to defensive breakdowns and mental mistakes that usually cost them goals, it’s very infuriating to watch but great for overs.
Goaltending
Stuart Skinner was in the starters net today at teams practice, he is the expected starter tomorrow and he’s playing great.
