The Oilers continue their trip through Pennsylvania tonight when they take on the Penguins who are fighting tooth and nail to stay in the wild card race in the east.
The Oilers were in a similar situation themselves most of the season, but now as they sit tied for 3rd in the Pacific they will likely begin a push for the division title.
Both of these teams have some really similar issues honestly and both teams fan bases desperately want their general managers to make moves, myself included. The biggest weakness in Pittsburgh seems to be their third line which has 8 combined points in their last 55 games.
The Oilers continue to get very poor defending from their personnel, mainly their “top” players on the backend can be identified as the culprits but the commitment to defending needs to be amped up from the forwards as well. And after Campbell began to heat up after his slow start, he has fallen back to earth and has given some shaky performances as of late and it appears they will ride Skinner for now.
This time of year is now going to get hectic as you all know in the NHL and it’s essentially the only thing on my mind these days, I have been obsessively checking my phone for updates from Kevin Weekes. hoping to manifest trades of Chychrun and Patty Kane to the Oil.
With that, let’s check into these two and figure out what market we like.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are a really frustrating team to be a fan of, cover, and read about by the major media figures who cover them. They gutted out a win off the back of McDavid last game against an awful Philadelphia Flyers team who were praised for being a good one by reporters who I otherwise really respect and like.
Offense
Offensively this team is stellar and there’s nothing new to report here. They’re still #1 in the league in goals per game and on the powerplay.

Defense
Defensively this team is incredibly bad and someone who I haven’t picked on a lot this year at all who I will today is Cody Ceci and his play. The fact that this team is icing him and Nurse as their top pair is, for lack of a better term, embarrassing.
Ceci chucked an absolute grenade into Brobergs feet the other night which costed the Oilers a goal and he did not bear down to try and correct his mistake either. He really needs to rediscover his game from last year in the playoffs if Ken Holland does not make an upgrade on the blue line.
Goaltending
The net now once again belongs to Skinner who takes over for Jack Campbell who has struggled as of late. Nice signing Kenny boy.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Good news for Pittsburgh is that Tristan Jarry has returned from his absence who they sorely missed and is expected to go in this one. They desperately need some better goaltending to make up for their average offensive output.
Offense
Their offence sits right in the middle of the league in most major metrics including goals per game with 3.2, despite taking a helluva a lot of shots per game. The issue for them is that they aren’t getting any production from their depth guys right now and rely far too heavily on Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who can obviously handle it and are playing very well this year, but they really need their supporting cast to get some work done in this group project.
Defense
Another one of their veterans who has played unbelievable this season when in the lineup is Kris Letang, and the young guy Pierre Oliver-Joseph is having a solid season himself.
After that the Pens are a little underwhelming but not terrible.
Goaltending
As I said before, Jarry returns to the lineup which will be a massive boost for this team who were leaning on DeSmith who just simply wasn’t getting the job done.

Free Edmonton Oilers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Prediction
I am gonna fade my Oilers in this one and take the Penguins ML, for a couple reasons. First I just can’t see the Oilers with their flaws sweeping a Pennsylvania road trip, and secondly the Pens remember the embarrassing loss dealt to them by the Oilers months ago.
