This Oilers column that is supposed to be about betting and their team and player analysis has basically become my diary that documents my anger and depression that inevitably comes with the territory of being a lifelong Oilers fan therefore, I sincerely apologize.
But misery loves company, so why don’t we wallow in our sorrows together and see if we can’t find a winner in this matchup to pick our spirits up.
The Oilers recalled defenceman Philip Broberg today indicating that not only is he ready to return from his ailment sustained prior to the regular season but also that they are well aware of their defensive struggles and are going to shake things up albeit another minor lineup juggle.
I am very sick of hearing all the takes online about this squadron, it’s almost all wrong and/or bs. Most people say “take away McDavid and Leon and what is this team?” Incredibly stupid argument, take away any teams top two players and their likely to not play well any given night and furthermore, this team was tied for 6th in the league in goals per game average up until last game against the Islanders so if you think trading assets to acquire more scoring is the answer to this teams woes you are dead wrong and don’t really understand hockey.
And on the flip side you see a ton of Oilers fans or critics who are saying it’s a bad idea to give up draft picks who “could” turn into studs down the road and risk a bad trade now like for example Jakob Chychrun. These people are equally if not more incorrect.
The time is now to maximise this teams window and it’s going to require mortgaging the future not only to compete for a Stanley Cup but also to show Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl they are willing to do anything for them and to incentivise them to resign.
And to those people, how has Edmonton’s drafting gone the last 15 years? Clowns.
Edmonton Oilers
Heading into this matchup the Oilers are 3-7 in their last ten games and have played very poorly in their own zone.
In their previous matchup against the Islanders they poured 49 shots on net and just couldn’t beat the absolute rock wall that is Sorokin and therefore that’s a game where they lost not for lack of effort.
And you can’t win’em’ all of course, but this team is struggling in their own zone to a degree that some peewee teams don’t and it’s hard to watch. If they don’t trade for help soon it’s very possible they could finish in the bottom ten of the league.
New York Rangers
The Rangers have taken a big step back this year and the issues they had last season a lot of the analytics community were telling us to look for have come to light.
They are really similar to another team I have covered a bunch and that’s the Florida Panthers. They do take a ton of shots per game but the goals just aren’t coming right now at the clip they were used to last year.
As a result their shooting percentage is rather poor of course, and because Shesterkin isn’t bringing his other-worldly play that he did last year the amount of high danger chances they allow are coming back to haunt them.
Whether or not that is due to teams having tape on him now or he is just starting slow remains to be seen. I still expect the Rangers to be in the playoffs but I do think this team is taking a step back in their progress for sure and consider them a very beatable opponent for the Oilers.
That being said, this team’s numbers defensively are rather good. They allow 2.71 goals against per game and are 4th in the league in shots on goal allowed.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Oilers ML +122
One thing I do have to give the Oilers credit for is that they bounce back from poor outings well. And they know what’s being said right now about them and are feeling the heat.
I think it’s a nice play taking them as a hungry dog here, I can’t see them mailing it in and not getting at least one win on this trip to the metro New York area. So expect their best effort tomorrow in this matinee matchup.
Gimme the Oil and let’s endure the torture again together.
