Saturday night the Oilers have an opportunity to punch their ticket to the second round as they take a 3-2 series lead into Los Angeles. Both teams get a nice break as the Kings share a building with two NBA teams who are also in playoffs.
We know a couple of important Oilers are battling some injuries so the rest should do them wonders.
Last game we finally saw the Oilers break through offensively the way a lot of us expected they would earlier, a night where they really cracked the armor of Korpisalo and actually chased him from the net.
The Kings had some decent stretches of play but they really got out skilled and out worked from the jump and I expect a far better performance from them.
So let’s take a bit closer of a look at this one and see if the Oilers can close this thing out.
Los Angeles Kings
As I said earlier the Kings didn’t necessarily lay an egg on Tuesday night, they just got outclassed by what many consider to be the better team and didn’t have an answer for head coach Jay Woodcroft’s lineup adjustments.
Offense
Offensively they tacked 3 goals on the board which in these playoffs has been and should be enough to win.

But the Oilers finally broke down Korpisalo in a big way and we’ll get to that a bit more in a moment.
Defense
Defensively this group has limited Connor McDavid to 8 points in 5 games which I find rather funny that many pundits and people online view as a failure for 97, or say that he “hasn’t fully shown up yet”.
It’s still an impressive performance by this blueline though who is very, very good.
Goaltending
Joonas Korpisalo is an incredible goalie and his being pulled last game does not change that. The Oilers cannot get ahead of themselves on that front in thinking that will happen again.
As a result of his performance however, his sv% dipped to .904 which is still not bad at all, and better than his counterpart Stuart Skinner’s.
Edmonton Oilers
A couple of core Oilers really need to step it up. One forward and one defenseman and I will highlight them here for this post.
Offense
Kailer Yamamoto has struggled mightily this series in every conceivable way. My suspicion is that he’s battling something related to his concussion history and/or vestibular system concerns.
I sincerely hope the dude is okay if such is the case and if it is, I am wondering why he’s in the lineup.
Not to sound too cold hearted here but whatever the reason may be for his lack of production he is costing the team a valuable position in the lineup highlighted by his lack of effort and execution on the Kempe goal in game 5.
Didn’t get much help from the d however which leads me to my next point.
Defense
After a two months of remarkable play from Darnell Nurse, he is back to being laughably bad with his defensive awareness and play in his own territory.
He was better in game 5 than the one previous but still plays poorly considering how many minutes he is given by Dave Manson and the critical situations a lot of those minutes are played in.
I would of course be sympathetic if he’s battling a torn hip flexor like last season or anything of the sort.
But if he’s capable of playing through whatever it is he is possibly ailed with physically, he should be capable of knowing having your back to your man in front of your net is a big no-no mentally.
Goaltending
Skinner has been solid to my eye but the sv% doesn’t lie and he needs to elevate his game if the team has cup aspirations.

I expect the Kings’ best effort of the series but I think that Woodcroft sticks with that big line and put them out of their misery.
