The Oilers are moving on folks! I’m happy as a fan, blogger and bettor and although my puck lines didn’t hit very often (once in the series), the overs sure did.
At any rate they face the Golden Knights who rinsed the Jets in what was the shortest series of the round. They are a very daunting opponent for a number of reasons and we’ll dive into it here.
Like last round I’ll do a short and sweet series preview as well as game 1 pick so let’s go!
Las Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights in my opinion are a better stylistic matchup for Edmonton than the LA Kings were and before I get to the Knights strengths for this game and series I will lay out why I say that briefly.
The Knights are a fast and skilled team who like to run and gun and activate their defense in order to do so and they no doubt have the guys to do it well.
It creates a lot of mismatches and pressure that helped them be very successful during the year.
The problem is, it didn’t work so well against Edmonton who took 7 of an available 8 points off them in their 4 matchups.
If you try to run and gun against the Oilers it generally doesn’t work in your favor due to their biggest strength being speed and skill, and if you’re constantly activating your defense you are going to either give up odd man rushes resulting in goals or take penalties trying to stop them.
More on the special teams later.
Offense
I don’t want to be an arrogant, obnoxious homer here the Knights could definitely win this series if the Oilers don’t bring their A game.

This team has a ton of fire power and depth up front.
Mark Stone is back and finding his groove after a slow start in game 1 and Eichel got his playoff jitters out and showed up big time in game 2.
Defense
Defensively the Knights have a much better core on paper than the Oilers and what I think will be their biggest edge.
If McNabb is good enough to go with his UBI, and it sounds like Theodore is just out due to illness, this team has 6 rock steady players on the back end.
Goaltending
Goaltending is a big question mark for this team and has been all year which I wont harp on too much again as we have all season. And Laurent Brossoit had a great series in round 1.
But the Jets are not the Oilers.
That core was already underperforming and didn’t seem like much of a threat to begin with and then made a couple games interesting but ultimately, no gamebreakers.
The Oilers are the exact opposite, and are getting contributions from depth pieces as well as a defenseman who has 10 points in 6 games.
He’s going to have a much tougher time this go around.
Edmonton Oilers
I’ll keep the Oilers break down short and sweet.
Offense
They’re powerplay clicked at an insanely high rate, just under 60%, and Vegas’ penalty kill was awful (58.3%), as was their own powerplay (18.8%).
Defense
The Oilers penalty kill continues to be an issue for them and their total goals against in round 1 was 20 so there’s still work to be done here.
What is encouraging is that Ekholm and Bouchard picked up right where they left off, Kulak has really elevated his play, and Nurse had an excellent game 6 after some poor play earlier in the series.
Goaltending
Skinner looked great and in game 4 wasn’t pulled because of his own doing, all of his 3 goals against were the fault of the dmen in front of him.
Love where his game is, the broken stick mishap was a non-issue for me given the way he bounced back immediately.
