The Oilers are coming off of an absolute beating of the Sharks last night. They ran them out of their own building in a 7-1 drubbing.
Connor McDavid with a casual 3 points including 2 goals which brings his totals to 37 goals 43 assists and 82 points in 44 games. His season is absolutely absurd and seems to have the Hart Trophy locked up.
Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, Kostin, McLeod, Puljujarvi all found the scoresheet last night and Jack Campbell played his best game as an Oiler. As someone who covers the Oilers everyday, these wins over weak teams bother me slightly.
Knights Coming Back To Earth
Even though I worry that it will give management a false sense of confidence and make them think that they are on the right path to beating the strong rosters in the conference, which leads us into their opponent tonight, the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Knights are actually coming back down to earth a bit after an incredibly hot start to their season. They still remain first in the Pacific Division but their record is surprisingly not that much better than the Oilers’.
Another tidbit that is noteworthy for this one is that the Oilers this season have played much better on the road and the Knights home record has been lacklustre.
So let’s dive in a little closer as always and see what side we like.
Edmonton Oilers
After a disappointing loss to the Kings to start this road trip they are currently on the Oil are now on a 2 game heater and need at the very least a point tonight to make this road trip a success.
The Oilers overall should be in panic mode considering the big picture but in the near term the situation regarding the playoffs this season I don’t think is as dire as some Oilers fans or critics (including myself) may think.
Researching for this game put into perspective just how bad the Pacific Division is. The similarity in these two teams records is but one indicator.
Weak Division
In this case, I do believe some of these rosters are better than given credit for ie. the Flames, Oilers, Kings etc. But there is little doubt that this is the weakest division in hockey and the path for the Oilers to overtake some of their competition is absolutely available to them.
With that said, this game tonight is still big and they need 2 points from a battle against a much more complete team. They’ll have to find their legs early and cannot afford to have a slow start.
Las Vegas Golden Knights
The big advantage the Knights have in this one is that they are a far better defensive team. They’re numbers are better in every major metric than their counterparts.
They allow 2.81 goals per game, 30.3 shots on goal per game good for 11th and 10th respectively.
Average PK
What should give them pause is that they have an average penalty kill that is currently clipping at a 78.6% rate which is concerning going against the league’s top powerplay unit.
But they only take 6.8 minutes worth of infractions per game which is a concern for the Oilers as they rely on the powerplay to jumpstart there game a lot of the time.

Additionally, I like that the Oilers are showing signs of improvement even considering their recent competition. Players like Nurse and Bouchard who have really been struggling are starting to look like they are finding their way.
Also, in Bouchard’s case, even when he is defensively poor he still chips in on the scoresheet rather often.
All in all, I will take a chance on the Oil in this one!
