It’s the first game back for both these clubs after the all-star break, and both teams sent players to participate that did very well. Dylan Larkin continues his contract extension bid and won MVP of the final.
On an unrelated note, I find it very confusing that Larkin hasn’t been re-signed by GM Steve Yzerman. They should be showing progress out of the rebuild soon and the fact that their captain is sort of hanging in the balance as of right now seems strange.
The Horvat contract also does not help Yzermans cause in terms of getting bottom dollar.
Regardless, we take a closer look at this matchup in the big D tomorrow night.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers offence is still clipping away at an incredible rate. They are 1st in the NHL in goals per game and still boast the best power play in the league, a title they have not relinquished yet this year.
Offense
The offence per the Lowetide and the Athletic this morning is above a 50% goal share with and without McDavid on the ice for the first time in a long time which is unbelievable news for this team and it’s fans.
Scoring depth is one of the many issues this team has been plagued with during the McDavid era and so to see them more well rounded is a sight for sore eyes.

Defense
The Oilers’ defensive unit is still below average despite what you may read in Oilers insider media circles. Bouchard and Nurse have been playing better in their last 10 and Broberg is excelling in a sheltered role.
But that should not sway the fans or the management group into thinking this unit is good enough for a deep playoff run. They absolutely should upgrade particular on the left side but both could use it.
Goaltending
Jack Campbell is back to form and Stuart Skinner is riding high after appearing in his first All-Star event, they are not elite but this position group is not what they need to worry about right now.
Detroit Red Wings
The Wings are below average in most major team metrics which is not what was expected of them this season. Mo Seider is taking a step back which is not necessarily cause to hit the panic button but he seems to struggle a bit against elite competition.
Offense
On offence they rank 22nd in the NHL in goals per game, 26th in the league in shots on goal, and 21st on the powerplay. They do have a strong shooting percentage which can sometimes indicate a breakthrough on the horizon but until they start executing better that of course remains to be seen.
Defense
The story on defence is really much of the same and the front office is likely regretting giving up what it costed to get Ben Chiarot. I love Chiarot, he’s a hard nosed player with good skills and someone the Oilers probably could’ve used at the time this deal went down.
But his underlying numbers are very concerning, even for someone like me who isn’t a firm believer in analytics and fancy stats being a huge determining factor in evaluating a player. He is certainly not worth the price tag.
Goaltending
The goaltending is also part of the lacklustre numbers, Husso is a very good goalie and had a strong start but is starting to slide a bit in his last 15 starts. His current stat line is 3.00 GAA and a .900 sv %.

I like the Oilers here as short faves. Hard to bet against a team as hot as them. Except they often look flat after time off, I seem to recall losing badly not long ago when they started a road trip against LA after an extended break.
Nonetheless I will take them on the ML here.
