I cannot be stopped on NHL totals right now. If you’re fading me you haven’t won a bet in a while.
I am leaning to the over again in this one but I also have another play so hang with me until the end to find out!
Both of these teams played two of the most entertaining games I have seen all season long on Saturday. The Sabres beat the Lightning in a matinee game where we hit the over, and Jon Cooper ruffled some feathers by sitting his top dogs Point, Stamkos and Kucherov in the 3rd period.
And then later on in the afternoon the Oilers played in a firewagon game against the Jets where they lossed by two goals one being an empty netter in a night where their starting goalie let them down at least twice.
If you’ve been reading my blog this season you have no doubt heard me defend Campbell many times and shit on our defence for hanging him out to dry, and I still feel for the guy for a number of reasons.
But he just simply has to be better and the numbers don’t lie. His mates in front of him were not good in the game against Winnipeg, but his run support was there and had it not been for two weak ones this would’ve gone to overtime.
I will dig a little deeper into it so without further ado, let’s dive in.
Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres are absolutely electric to watch, one of my favorite young teams of the bunch that are on their way up the ranks.
I also evaluated them as a poor defending team for awhile this year similar to the Oilers, but I am having second thoughts on that now. Dahlin and Power are both so good and I think that next year we won’t be having this conversation.
They put the Lightning through a track meet on Saturday and they looked completely out of place against these young Sabres.
Offense
Offensively they are incredibly skilled and up and down their lineup they play at breakneck pace.

Jost, Tuch (who may be out for this one), Thomson, etc. Go on down the line and they are just loaded with young talent.
I love watching this team and I do think they present some challenges to the Oilers, especially the Oilers blueline, that will cause them to have some fits in their own zone tomorrow night.
Defense
Despite the two young studs I mentioned earlier this team still has some room for improvement. By the numbers they’re only slightly worse than the Oilers, but that’s pretty bad. They lack experience and play a rather chaotic style.
They are 25th in the NHL in goals allowed per game, and even scarier for them, they are second last in the NHL on the penalty kill. Not a good stat going against the Oilers.
Goaltending
Goaltending is something the Sabres just do not have, no disrespect to Craig Anderson who is an absolute legend. But he is just not the same as he once was and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is expected to start in this one who is having a very shaky campaign.
Edmonton Oilers
Now the Oilers have goaltending struggles of their own. Oilers fans are very fatigued about it and I don’t blame them.
However, even after Saturday and what I just said, I think that Campbell got WAY more blame than he deserved.
Were two of them weak goals? Sure.
But there were 4 others that were not his fault at all, and completely on the defence in front of him who are incapable of correcting their bad habits. Most importantly puck watching.
Offense
Just go look at each of Leon’s 3 goals. This offence cannot be stopped right now it’s just that simple.
Defense
The aforementioned bad habits of this defence don’t just end at puck watching although that one is the most fatal. But they also work hard at getting into position with their assignment only to still allow them to get a deflection on a point shot, they don’t finish the task by taking his stick out of the equation almost ever.
It’s really frustrating to watch as a fan and once again as good as Ekholm has been, it still wasn’t enough to patch this team’s holes.
Goaltending
Skinner is expected for this one, and he definitely has been better and I think he’s going to be a very good goalie in this league for years to come.
That being said, he’s not perfect either and I think the Sabres will be getting at least a couple tomorrow all things considered.

Free Edmonton Oilers vs. Buffalo Sabres NHL Prediction
The over is an absolute lock in this game you have to take it if you’re serious about winning money. But I have another pick for you too.
Oilers puckline. It’s a risk don’t get me wrong, and I understand if you have reservations.
But, this Sabres team has an atrocious penalty kill. They have no system and don’t play it aggressively.
They don’t take a ton of penalties which is good for them but even if the Oilers get 3-4 powerplays they will capitalize on at least half of them.
I cannot wait for this game tomorrow guys, it’s also my birthday so let’s get the Oilers winning me one here.
