The Oilers are coming off an overtime loss to their division rival Golden Knights in what was a very good game entertainment wise and with the exception of a couple costly mistakes I thought the Oilers played a pretty good game. There’s a couple of encouraging signs for them heading into the playoffs and a few not so encouraging ones we will get into here.
In the other corner we have the Coyotes who are playing some damn good hockey lately and are coming off a loss in extra time of their own, a shootout defeat to the Avalanche a little earlier today. And when I say damn good hockey, don’t jump down my throat I know they have lost 3 straight but I will unpack what I mean a little more in depth and it should make sense (I hope).
Arizona Coyotes
The Coyotes are 6-4 in their last ten games but what’s most impressive in the back 9 of their campaign is their home record which is a formidable 20-11-4. Andre Tourigny has this group inspired and they show it each night even in losses.
They don’t get blown out and they give every opponent a tough game which is encouraging if you’re a Coyotes fan. They remind me a lot of last year’s Senators or Sabres. Scrappy, young and talented with hostile home rinks.
If I am correct in that assessment it will hopefully lead to a jump ahead in the rebuild process next season. They still have a ways to go before they make playoffs, but they have a lot of young talent that’s playing great right now and in all honesty with the way things are trending for some western teams playoffs may not be that far out of reach next year.
Offense
This offense runs through their best player and future super star Clayton Keller, it’s the easy thing to write about which I try to avoid but there’s just no getting around it and he deserves the praise.

The kid is on fire this year with 35 goals and 44 assists, just above a point per game pace and he’s been stellar as of late. Him and Schmaltz have very good chemistry on the top line and give any competition fits each night.
If I’m Dave Manson and Jay Woodcroft, I’m a little worried about who you send out there to match-up against this line. Yes it’s the NHL and no matter who you play there will be elite talent but I think that’s a bit of a knock on the Oilers as a whole considering where they are in their own process and where they Coyotes are respectively.
Defense
With that being said, their goals for per game and offensive production is very bad overall and their defensive metrics are even worse. So this team will have all they can handle against the potent Oilers hungry for points.
But this team should not and can not be taken lightly. Just ask the Avalanche who threw all they had at them today and just barely got away with the win so this certainly won’t be an easy out for Edmonton.
Goaltending
The information I can find right now says that Ingram is expected but I highly doubt that since he played today so go into this thinking Velmejka starts, but keep an eye on it as always.
Edmonton Oilers
I won’t spend too much time dissecting the Oilers for this one because I have hammered home so many points with them all year and you know what you’re getting with this club. But instead I want to focus on one encouraging sign and one discouraging sign I have noticed with this team’s recent stretch and how it affects them heading into the post-season.
Offense
The bad news first. Evander Kane has really struggled since returning from IR.
He had a great game against Seattle where he scored a hat trick but beyond that day his game looks disorganized. He takes sloppy penalties, he’s frequently out of position, he makes poor decisions and isn’t playing to his physical strengths.
It’s not time to panic, we know he’ll find his swagger again and he can be an absolute force. Woodcroft has shown us and him that he clearly still believes in his ability as well given how much he continues to throw him out there.
But it is a concern.
Defense
The good news is this team is playing quite a bit better defensively, specifically a guy I am very hard on, Darnell Nurse.
All of the clubs he has in his bag right now are being put to use and it’s awesome to watch. He had a great takeaway preventing the rush in last night’s game that stood out, but he also skated very well, distributed the puck and broke up plays.
He was solid all evening which is a continuation of his recent play which is an excellent sign for Edmonton this time of year.
Goaltending
Stuart Skinner in last night’s game let in a weak one 61 seconds in off of a 2 on 1 shot from Eichel he should have probably had but otherwise played fine and his teammates were really to blame for the other ones. He is expected for this one but monitor it, I have a hunch Campbell might get the call.

Free Edmonton Oilers vs. Arizona Coyotes NHL Prediction
The reason why I feel confident in laying this puckline is because the Coyotes were just in a track meet today with the Avalanche and I think they’re going to have cement in their skates off a back-to-back.
That coupled with how the Oilers play I think it’ll just be a little too much for what is a pretty below average team already despite the fact they have displayed some promise lately.
