It seemed like the Red Wings would never be in the position they are in now. A franchise that had institutionalized winning like no other has now had to play the role of sellers on trade deadline day.
As for the Oilers their fortunes have changed this season too, only in the opposite direction.
What was once the team of young stars who couldn’t deliver, now look to be moving towards their potential.
Detroit Red Wings
Well it had been 25 straight years of playoffs, winning and a satisfied fanbase. Imagine being a fan who had grown up never knowing their team to miss the playoffs. Welcome to the real world Detroit, now time to start a rebuild.
What we don’t know yet about the Red Wings franchise yet is whether or not they even know how to rebuild.

Their quarter-century long success came largely from bridging the gap from the Yzerman years to the Zetterberg ones. They are now stuck in a place they haven’t been for over two generations.
This will be the second half of an all Albertan back to back series agains the Flames and Oilers for the Wings. That’s a tough stretch of hockey against two teams fighting for either a playoff spot or playoff seeding. Especially when you’re a team that has run out of hope for their season.
It’s not as though the Red Wings are going to phone it in for the rest of the year however, as they probably don’t even know how to do that.
Edmonton Oilers
Did the Oilers magically figure out the correct number of veterans to mix in with their young stars? Is Wayne Gretzky’s executive presence enough to motivate a rag tag bunch of kids who have yet to perform to their true potential?
There are plenty of reasons to believe the answer is yes to both of those questions.

Connor McDavid leads the league in scoring, but the true measure of his success will be based on post-season play. This is a franchise that has seen dynasties built on the backs of young players with tremendous expectations thrust on them.
McDavid’s first trip to the playoffs is on the horizon, which will either cause him to rise to the occasion or do the exact opposite.
The Oilers were oddly silent on trade deadline day. For a team poised to make their postseason returna, that seems unfortunate.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Oilers have lost 40 of their last 56 games after 3 days rest.
- Red Wins have dropped 8 of last 11 road games.
- Oilers have won 5 of last 7 vs Atlantic.
- Red Wings have dropped 5 of last 7 vs Western Conference.
Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Red Wings are 26th in the league in scoring and Cam Talbot is coming off stopping 26 of 27 in a great performance against St. Louis. The Wings are also coming into this game as part of a 3 game Western Canadian road swing, while Edmonton has been sitting at home since Tuesday thinking about how awesome it’ll be to go to the playoffs.
I just can’t see the Red Wings coming into a packed Rogers Center on a Saturday night and having the energy to compete with a hungry and well-rested Oilers team.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Oilers -1.5
The Red Wings have had trouble scoring at the best of times this year. The second night of a back to back is far from the best of times.
I wouldn’t expect Detroit to be much of a scoring threat on Saturday, whereas the Oilers are looking to embrace the playoff like atmosphere in Edmonton.
