The Stars are getting some incredible play from Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin who in the past two seasons have appeared to be cap anchors. Seguin has simplified his game is playing a more depth/checking role and Benn has rediscovered his scoring touch.
They also pride themselves on their defensive game which is stellar and fun to watch. And then beyond that they have the best young goalie in the NHL in Jake Oettinger.
On the other side in this matchup we have the Florida Panthers who don’t look like the wagon they were last year. But as I have reported before here, the Panthers take an absurd amount of shots on net.
They average over 40 pucks on net per game and therefore I have to think that the offence is coming eventually. But the eye test doesn’t lie right now the numbers are there but the percentage isn’t.
So I am a little weary of where I lay my hard earned money in this one so let’s dive in a little deeper.
Dallas Stars
The Stars are 2nd in the league in goals per game. Yup. the Stars.
They are hanging 3.75 goals per game on the board and don’t show any signs of being frauds anymore. They also allow only 2.69 goals against per game which is tied for 6th.
Their power play is 33.3% which is second only to Colorado’s. And their shooting percentage is 1st in the league at 12.3%.
This is an incredibly impressive team right now playing some great hockey. Problem is despite how good they are playing, they are only 5-5 over their last 10 games.
With these kinds of numbers you’d think that the wins would be significantly higher over that 10 game stretch which makes them a tough team to handicap.
Florida Panthers
The Panthers power play is abysmal and their goal scoring metric is mediocre. They also win less than half of their faceoffs which is something the Stars are rather good at.
And their shooting percentage is dead last in the NHL, at a measly 8%. Their defensive metrics are all middle of the pack as well.
This Panthers team is just unimpressive so far this year and yet they do continue to get some wins and keep pace in the race.
