Yeah so that was the last time I take the Lightning. I do think that they will get at least one game from the Avalanche, I am not rushing to bury them just yet but what we witnessed last night was sheer dominance.
Watching the Avalanche is truly hockey porn. Not only are they incredibly skilled and fast but they are insanely well coached and structured and unwaveringly disciplined.
They never stray away from their gameplan, they do not take penalties, every loose puck is theirs. Each shift when new personnel jump over the boards they play like it’s an urgent emergency and they are down by a goal or two.
It’s incredible to watch and it’s hard to imagine them losing this series.
With that being said and as noted above I find it equally hard to believe that we see the Lightning roll over and die. I think that everyone in that room is going to be incredibly motivated to show up in front of their home crowd in game 3 and this is still a very good hockey team.
So, let’s dive into this thing and see which way we find to lay our hard earned money on. It WILL NOT be Tampa ML, I promise.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay could hardly establish the offensive zone last night. They played with no purpose, no speed and created no high danger chances.
On their first power play of the night they went offside and a few seconds later Victor Hedman iced the puck. It was legitimately hard to watch.
Later in the game on the powerplay they also gave up an odd-man rush where Cale Makar scored to make it 6-0. They looked flat, defensively irresponsible and downright uncharacteristic.
Andre Vasilevskiy was also abysmal and particularly so on his blocker side which appeared weak in the early going which the Avalanche personnel picked up on and continued to shoot there all night long.
After last night there really isn’t any good reason for this feeling other than their reputation but I still think that will be the worst game we see from Tampa. They are too good and too experienced not to course correct.
Colorado Avalanche
Valeri Nichushkin scored at the 2:54 mark and the Avalanche never stopped. Even in the last minute of play in the first period up 3-0 already, the Rantanen line came out and was pressing for more.
This team never takes their foot off the gas, game to game, period to period, shift by shift. I don’t aim to be a hockey alarmist, but I have been watching hockey closely for 20 years and I cannot recall ever seeing anything like this.
Later in the game, head coach Jon Cooper was sending out Bogosian, Perry and Maroon with regularity looking for some scrums and rough stuff to potentially draw a penalty for momentum and it ended up just hurting them worse.
Reason being is that the Avs do not get mixed up in that extra curricular stuff, they are so poised and disciplined it’s really aggravating for opponents. Reminds me of the early 2000’s Red Wings teams led by Nicklas Lidstrom.

I think the over at even money here is the best way to get into this game. I think the next game will be tighter checking no doubt but the Avs just scored 7 on their own, even if their goal total is cut in half and the Bolts find their rhythm this can easily go over.
Happy hunting.
