In another matinee game we have two of the top teams in the Western Conference going at it after the Rangers Bruins game ends. These two have had polar opposite trajectories this season.
The Avalanche struggled with injuries all year and are still without their all-star defenseman Cale Makar. But now they’ve gotten some guys back from injury and are looking like the defending cup champs again.
The Avs are 7-2-1 in their last ten games. The Stars on the other hand came out of the gate fast but have fallen back to earth down the stretch here, posting a 4-3-3 record in their last ten games.
One thing both these teams have going for them is goaltending, just like the B’s and Rangers match-up we just covered these are two total studs starting tomorrow. Hence why the totals are where they are.
So, let’s take a closer look at these two and figure out what market is the play.
Dallas Stars
The Stars made a move yesterday to get Max Domi, bolstering an already pretty good offensive attack. He brings an interesting dynamic to the Stars however with his gritty style of play.
He does lack defensive acumen which I won’t get too deeply into because it’s been on repeat for days and days.
Offense
Offensively this team gives you a few different looks line to line. They’re smart, creative, experienced and youthful at the same time.

Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are having resurgent seasons as well which is massive for this group.
Defense
The Stars defensive play is really what makes them great, they limit high danger chances at a really high rate, limit shots entirely very well, and are tied for second in the league in goals allowed per game.
Goaltending
In net their starter is G Jake Oettinger who is one of my personal faves in the league, the guy is the perfect blend of skill and battle. He works so incredibly hard and is posting a massive year numbers wise, 2.29 GAA and a .923 sv%.
Colorado Avalanche
Despite the fact that they are getting some people back as I said before, this team is still without a number of key people on the their roster which includes Valeri Nichushkin who is out with an illness tomorrow.
The good news for them however is that Cale Makar has now been upgraded to probable for tomorrow’s bout.
Offense
Offensively this team is incredibly potent of course, and bring a mix of dogged determination and very high end skill. And again after a relatively slow start for their standards they have turned it on over their last 15 games.
They currently sit 15th overall in the league in goals for per game with 3.15.
Defense
One thing that the Avs are really struggling with this season is the penalty kill. They currently rank 19th in the NHL with a 77.2% success rate. Something that will not fare well against the Stars who has a really elite power play.
Goaltending
The Avalanche have a stellar netminder of their own in Alexander Georgiev. After prying him from his backup role in New York City he has flourished in his expanded role.
Posting a 2.57 GAA and .921 sv%.

I think I’m going to take the Stars in this one. As close as it is on the line I think the Avs injuries are significant enough for me to think it will impact them tomorrow on the road, especially Nichushkin whose a stalwart in their lineup.
