I do have some concerns as a Hurricanes backer as a playoff squad, they seem to lack sandpaper in their game. But this team is one of if not the deepest roster in the NHL.
They are without question the best defensively and once they get Freddie back full time in net they’ll be tough to score on.
This is a tough one to handicap though because I think the Avs match up well against the Canes given their play styles. Colorado plays with a lot of grit and speed, coupled with their incredibly high end talent it’s not a great matchup for Carolina.
Carolina has insane depth and certainly are talented in their own right but Aho and Svechnikov aren’t Mackinnon and Makar, they are also without Teravainen at the moment which is a huge blow.
So let’s dive deep into this battle between two titans.
Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche are back to form big time and doing everything a hockey teams needs to do and they’re doing it extremely well. Defence, scoring, goaltending, special teams.
You name it, they’re doing it at an elite level.
Georgiev is posting a .924 sv % right now which is unreal. He stepped into his new role as a full time starter and is running away with it which is awesome news for the Avs.
They’re also keeping their goals against down to 2.71 per game which is unreal as well, still not the best goal differential in the league somehow.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes are winning games right now despite not having quite yet found their offensive potential. They rank 19th in the NHL in goals per game with an average of 3.
The Canes are absolutely suffocating as a defensive unit though, they do not give up many high danger chances at all, they are spectacular at limiting shots on goal, and are 6th in the league at goals allowed per game at 2.69.
Raanta is slated for this one for now and his start hasn’t been excellent but good enough for now. We’ll see if the Hurricanes can find that next gear offensively which I still believe is coming.
My biggest concern is just the eye test with their offence. They don’t force the play to the middle into dirty areas enough, they try to get their high danger slot shots off the back of the cycle game which they are good at but the opportunities aren’t coming right now and they don’t adjust to a grinder style to create those chances.
It reminds me a lot of the Panthers last year against the Lightning. Unwilling to play the game in the trenches, which I am not a huge fan of in this game against the Avs because they are a team you’re going to have to beat ugly especially if they get up early.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Avalanche ML +100
There’s actually some +105’s out there as well, it appears the public are hitting the Canes early. So I am going to fade them here for a few reasons.
First of all I just don’t think the Canes match up well against the Avalanche’s strengths. The Avalanche aren’t a bunch of goons by any means but they play a heavy, hard working and physical style of play and the Hurricanes just simply don’t.
Whether or not someone on the roster can drag them into that kinda battle really remains to be seen so I am going to take the road dawgs here.
