So I do not need much convincing on this line at all and I am sure you seasoned hockey cappers don’t either. But for the sake of keeping this post interesting and you around to read it, let’s take a closer look at both these squads and their recent play.
Forward and scumbag Matthew Tkachuk received a 2 game suspension for sticking LA Kings goalie Jonathan Quick in the eye on their recent road trip out west.
Unfortunately this terrible human being is also the Panthers best player and yet they have not looked good even with him in the lineup so this is a considerable blow to their lineup.
The Hurricanes are on the other side of the spectrum, we’re seeing them hit their stride right now and they are completely healthy. They are starting to pull away slightly in the Metro and only trail New Jersey in the standings.
So, we take a further look into these two and their trends as well as how they matchup against each other.
Carolina Hurricanes
One negative stat for this team is their goals per game average which is middle of the pack and not at all what any of us predicted. They are scoring at a clip of 3.08 goals for per game right now.
I, among many others who cover them believe there is another offensive gear they have yet to find that we will inevitably see. One knock I have on them as part of the eye test is their unwillingness to get to dirty areas to score which ended up being the reason they lost in the playoffs.
They do remind me a bit of the Lightning and Capitals teams of old who were “soft” and could always get it done in the regular season but were unable to elevate their game to where it needed to be to win the cup, prior to their cup victories of course.
But, they won’t be needing that jazz tonight as their playing a team with the exact same issues and then some who aren’t nearly as good up front.
Florida Panthers
A metric that the Panthers actually lead the NHL in is shots on goal per game, they pile them on at a rate of 40 per contest. This should be a point of positivity for them and their coaching staff that indicates goals are coming.
Right now they are certainly having trouble solving opposing netminders but it’s certainly not for lack of effort. Duclair’s absence continues to reveal what he meant with this offence last year as their attack lacks speed and just seems stale.
Again, I do not think this will necessarily remain this way I do think we will see them improve but I also think that this team is worse than last year even when they get Ekblad back Saturday and aren’t likely to make much of a splash down the stretch.
And as for this game specifically, they are starting Bobrovsky who has abysmal numbers yet again and I think the Hurricanes forwards will light ’em up like a Christmas tree.
