The Flames won two straight before dropping one to Tampa Bay yesterday. Most agree the Flames will turn it around and get back to their winning ways but they’re beginning the road trip their division rival Oilers just went on and finished 2-2.
Markstrom hasn’t been himself this season which is a big reason why the Flames have struggled a quarter of the way through the season. He should be able to turn it around but the question will come up eventually, if he continues to struggle, if his best days are behind him.
The Panthers are getting more wins than their counterparts but they are a similar story. Failure to produce consistently with some newly acquired star talent is the tale of the tape for these two.
But the big story line of this matinee match up, the first time Matthew Tkachuk faces his old team after giving them the bird.
I give him credit for letting them know he wasn’t going to re-sign there so they could get a haul in return for him, which they did, but there’s still no doubt some bad blood there especially for the fans.
So my heated rival foes down there in Cowtown have had this one circled on their calendar since the middle of summer. And so have I..
And, I can’t wait to bet on it, so let’s dive in.
Calgary Flames
As I said before these two teams are really comparable thus far. Looking for an edge between the two in this game specifically is hard to find.
The one thing the Flames are severely lacking right now though is success on special teams. Their power play is clipping at 16% right now which is just terrible and their penalty kill is 77% good for 20th in the league.
Which doesn’t bode well for the amount of penalty minutes per game they average either, just over 10 also 20th in the league.
I do think this squad will right the ship eventually but despite their two back to back wins recently this team is playing some piss poor puck right now and are a hard team to lay my hard earned greenbacks on.
Florida Panthers
The Panthers are 5-5 in their last 10, far better than the 2-6-2 the Flames are posting right now who I am comparing them too but they really are similar teams by the numbers and here’s a couple examples.
Goals per game average; FLA 3.13 (16th) CAL 3.25 (14th)
Shots on goal per game average; FLA 40.4 (1st) CAL 36 (3rd)
Faceoff %; FLA 49.6 (18th) CAL 49.3% (20th)
The list goes on defensively but you can look those up for yourself. Anyway you slice it these two teams are playing really similar games at the moment one is just producing wins and the other isn’t.
That’s hockey baby, but obviously, something’s gotta give in this one.
