The Flames are dead.
Dom from the Athletic posted a board on Twitter yesterday that calculates the Flames have a 25% chance of making the playoffs. To which he said “wow goodbye Calgary!”
Now I love Dom, but I do not appreciate the tinge of arrogance the analytics crowd has within their tweets, implying that their models and analysis are 100% correct all the time and this is no different.
Yes, the Flames are unlikely to make it now. But we have seen crazier stuff happen, and they are not that far off Winnipeg for the wild card race.
It could conceivably happen that they catch fire (no pun intended) and squeeze into the mix, so I’m not willing to just wave goodbye to them yet.
That being said, they are playing terribly at the moment and a camera panned to their bench on Saturday night HNIC feed and the guys looked completely dejected. A lot of buzz going around that they have quit on head coach Darryl Sutter.
The Stars on the other hand are rolling again and have won three straight. I watched them dismantle the Avs on Saturday and they looked like a true cup contender.
So, let’s look a little closer at this matchup. A rematch of last year’s first round matchup.
Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars scare me, full stop.
I’ve said a number of times but it cannot be said enough that their management group was utterly genius for allowing Klingberg to walk to free agency this off-season. This defence corps is better without his cap hit.
Heiskanen, Suter, Hakanpaa, Lindell and more. This defence is the perfect blend of size and puck moving ability.
More on that later.
Offense
Offensively this team is very talented and their top 6 is one of the best in the NHL. Another perfect blend of size and skill, as well as a perfect blend of experience and youth.

I have covered it before but will reiterate that Benn and Seguin look like different players than they did last year. I feel so bad for Seguin as he’s essentially held together by nuts and bolts at this stage in his career and gets a ton of flack when he’s not producing.
Happy for those two as a big fan they’re back to a form we’re used to seeing them at.
Defense
I cannot say enough good things about this team’s defence group. They may not seem to have the flashiest names but boy is this group impressive.
They’re still 3rd in the league in goals allowed per game.
Goaltending
A lot of that also has to do with Oettinger who is just an absolute stud. Absolutely love this dude as a goalie one of the best in the game without question.
Calgary Flames
There just isn’t anything going right for the Flames right now and it’s a shame because I really wanted to see more battles of Alberta in the playoffs for years to come. That however is looking very unlikely at least this season.
Offense
Offensively is where this team really seems to struggle which is a massively different contrast from last season. I don’t think anyone thought they would be as potent with the changes of Tkachuk and Gaudreau to Huberdeau and Kadri, but none of us predicted it would be this poor.
Defense
Defensively this team is mediocre which is shocking considering the 6 they roll with, but they appear to be really missing Oliver Kylington whose very very good no doubt but with the addition of Weegar I would not have thought there would’ve been such a big hole on the right side in his absence.
Goaltending
Markstrom has been very bad this season which the entire hockey world is in shambles over because he is an unbelievable goaltender and has been his entire career. Gotta think he turns it around at some point maybe next year now but, sheesh.

Free Calgary Flames vs. Dallas Stars NHL Prediction
I am sticking to my rule and taking the juiced under in this one. With Oettinger expected to start coupled with the fact that the Flames cannot buy a goal right now, seems like an easy pick for me.
Let’s take the under and hang on.
