It seems that Bruce Boudreau has an innate ability to turn a team into a scoring force, no matter what the personnel group is.
He took over the coaching reigns of a Minnesota Wild team that was 19th overall in goals scored a year ago with a total of 216, and has transformed them to a team that currently sits in second in goals-per game at 3.6.
On the other side of redline sits a Buffalo squad that sits in 21st overall in that category this season with 2.5 on average per game.
The are certainly missing their franchise player in Jack Eichel, who was injured in pre-season and will be out until at least mid- November.
Buffalo Sabres
Kyle Okposo has been a nice addition to the young Sabres team, as a young power forward winger who can score and will be fun to watch play alongside Eichel once he returns.
Okposo has stepped up the scoring in the meantime, registering seven points in his seven games to share the team-lead with Rasmus Ristolainen and fellow new-comer, Ryan O’Reilly.
The secondary scoring is also young for the Sabres, and while hasn’t fully realized their potential, has a ton of it. Sam Reinhart, the former #2 overall selection in the draft, has four points in eight games thus far and should continue to develop into a solid secondary option behind Eichel.
On the blueline, the aforementioned Ristolainen leads the way.
The ink that’s currently drying on his new contract seems to be money well spent, and a steal at that, for GM Tim Murray and the Sabres.
The 22-year old defender has seven assists in eight games while logging an average of 25:15 of ice time per game.

GM Tim Murray was very familiar with goaltender Robin Lehner from their time in Ottawa together, and felt comfortable dealing a 1st round pick for him and former forward, David Legwand.
Lehner hasn’t been bad, with a .913 SV% and 2.61 GAA on the year in five games, although Anders Nilsson’s numbers with Buffalo this season- .937 SV% and 1.95 GAA- trump Lehner’s.
Minnesota Wild
The revamped Minnesota Wild offense has come alive under new coach, Bruce Boudreau. New centerman, Eric Staal, is playing some quality hockey after failing to find a footing last season between Carolina and the Rangers.
He has four goals and seven points in nine games with a +2 rating.
This may be as deep of a forward group that Minnesota has had, with Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu, Charlie Coyle, Mikael Granlund, Nino Niederreiter, Jason Pomminville, Chris Stewart and Jason Zucker rounding out a solid top-9.
However, none of them have more points than the team’s #1 D-man, Ryan Suter.
Suter, a steady two-way defender, has exploded for 10 points in his first nine games while logging huge minutes, as per usual. Suter is average 26:42 time-on-ice, and while his shooting percentage won’t stay at 15%, logging these type of minutes in a Boudreau-led offense sets up well for a potential career-year for Suter.

Devan Dubnyk has been a star goalie since arriving in Minnesota from Edmonton, and taking over the starting role.
Dubnyk’s first two years in Minnesota looked like this: 2014-15 he posted a .936 SV% and 1.78 GAA in 39 games with the Wild, and 2015-16 went to the tune of .918 and 2.33.
He’s followed it up with another great start, with a .952 SV% and 1.43 GAA across his seven starts.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- The Sabres are 2-1-2 on the road this season.

- Minnesota owns a +13 goal differential on the year and is undefeated at home.
Free Buffalo Sabres vs Minnesota Wild NHL Hockey Prediction
Until there’s good reason to go against the home Wild team, why would you?
They’re perfect at home and have a great goal differential for the season, and appear to be loving life under the new coach.
The Sabres are certainly not the toughest task they’ve faced yet and hold and advantage at most positions, if not all.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Minnesota -1.5
I can’t see Buffalo, without their star player in Eichel, rallying to hand Minnesota their first home loss of the season.
Dubnyk is too good to allow enough goals that would be insurmountable for his Wild team to overcome, and I like their forward group to outpace the Sabres.
