Boston Bruins
The Bruins are coming off a shootout loss the Canucks which I stayed up to watch. Saaco’s shootout lineup was certainly questionable and they did little to challenge Demko who has been one of the only bright spots of the Canucks roster this season.
Swayman, their interim goaltender while Rask deals with, well whatever he’s dealing with did not look sharp in this game which is perhaps per thescore.ca is reporting that Ullmark is expected to start this one. He has a respectable .911 save % and a 2.68 GAA throughout his 9 starts in which he’s gone 5-4.
The Bruins are losers of 2 straight now and are 5-4-1 on the road this season. They are tied for 20th in the league in goals per game and 25th in shooting percentage.
They do however rank very high in both faceoffs and shots on goal which are two stats that marry nicely together especially against a run and gun team like the oil. Anytime you can keep the puck off of Mcdavid’s and Draisitl’s stick is time well spent.
Defensively this team has the drop on Edmonton in goals allowed, SOG allowed, penalty kill % (by a hair), and are giving up only a fraction less but nonetheless, fewer minutes in penalties which is crucial against a juggernaut powerplay unit.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are losers of a season worst 3 straight and need to find a groove here soon. Koskinen started to look like his old self last night tuesday letting in a couple softies against the Wild. They have looked like they’re coming back down to earth as of late.
With that said, this team has a considerable advantage offensively over a very good Bruins by the numbers. 4th in the league in goals per game with 3.54, 1st on the powerplay which we’ve covered extensively here, tied for 3rd in shooting percentage and 7th in the league in faceoff percentage which is one area the Bruins have an edge.
Edmonton is also dealing with a slough of injuries still with Duncan Keith still on IR with an upper body injury, Cody Ceci infected with “you know what” and Slater Koekoek out with an LBI they are missing a lot of key minutes on their back end which could spell trouble against a very competent Bruins attack.
